Chairman Sensenbrenner said, "This study refutes the canard promoted by the illegal immigrant lobby here that the House- passed legislation's efforts to prevent illegal immigration and control the border cannot work. For example, Japan's tough sanctions against employers of illegal workers are effective in preventing illegal immigration. Therefore, the House's effort to stiffen penalties against employers hiring illegal workers can help shut off the job magnet that lures millions of immigrants to enter the U.S. illegally." "The study reports that 'illegal immigration is a worldwide problem' and that Japan and Switzerland are the most effective of those countries studied in enforcing their immigration laws. With all of the blustery rhetoric coming from opponents about a 'harsh' and 'draconian' House bill and the pontificating coming from foreign officials about how the U.S. should structure and enforce its immigration policies, I note that five out of the six countries studied -- including Mexico -- make illegal entry and unlawful presence a criminal offense. In reality, the House bill would bring U.S. immigration law more into line with most countries," added Chairman Sensenbrenner. http://judiciary.house.gov/media/pdfs/lawlibrimmreport5506.pdf

And the economies of Switzerland and Japan....... Japan sure does make good Toyotas. I wonder if they have any undocumented illegal workers in there factories?
I'm all for enforcement, but using Japan and Switzerland as examples????? Gimme a break.
Japan is an island nation with a distinct racial makeup. Most immigrants would stand out like sore thumbs. Plus, did I mention that Japan is an island?????? Hellooooo. Can't just waltz into Japan like you can here.
Isn't Switzerland boxed in by mountains on 3 sides? Again, limited access.
Can we come up with better examples than these, please?
Yeah, enforcement does work. And, in a country that is surrounded by water, it seems reasonable to put a lot of weight on the employers.
Still, in the US, with a land border, you've got to have enforcement at the border, too. If you don't, you can make it harder for illegals by cracking down on their employers, but you are also going to create a lot of desperate people who are either going to become criminals or welfare leeches. Simply fining employers, without protecting the borders, and while keeping the ridiculous "catch and release" policies isn't going to do much to cure the situation.
The government has to do its part by sealing the border and deporting the illegals it comes across. It can't shirk its responsibility by simply clamping down on employers. That's part of the solution, but it can only be a part, not the whole enchilada.
There are more boats landing on isolated beaches and coast than you might think. They catch a few sometimes, but probably not all.
"...including Mexico -- make illegal entry and unlawful presence a criminal offense."
Irony?
It would have to be a helluva lot more to justify using Japan as an example. Might as well throw in Cuba and Antarctica too. It's just a horrible example IMnotsoHO. :-)
"...including Mexico -- make illegal entry and unlawful presence a criminal offense."

It is an irony. And it is sickening. Bush will not let enforcement the way it should be done. He has deliberately muffled it, just like his reprobate predecessor.
Why is it Mexico thinks we should be more lenient on their citizens here ILLEGALLY than they are on citizens of other countries who come to mexico ILLEGALLY? Couldn't be that rip the USA is the name of the game could it?
If we enforce the laws we have now and fine and jail employers of ILLEGALS we would virtually eliminate the problem.
Japan is inundated by Koreans and Chinese who want factory work. Been there, seen it, got the T-shirt.
The Golden Rule is a big part of why I'm so anti-illegal. No other country in the world would be as tolerant of me, an American citizen, showing up and camping out. I want to treat others as their countries treat our citizens.
I learn something new every day. Thanks for the information.
- You've never heard of flotillas of "refugees" invading Japan? They do invade Australia, Europe & the U.S. when enforcemnt is not strict.
- When Immigration routinely raided restaurants, hotels, farms etc., we keep hordes of Mexican, who were even poorer than Mexicans today, from "reconquering" the Southwest -- WITHOUT a wall.
- When illegals couldn't get their children in schools, couldn't get their wives heath care, couldn't get Food-stamps, WIC, SSI etc - illegals had to leave their families behind. Fewer therefore came, and they were usually young single men who stayed a shorter time (sometimes only for a season).
Additionally, if workplace enforcement in the U.S. was as tough as Japan & Switzerland, we wouldn't have to talk about "how to deport 12 million", Dry up the work & social programs, and they'll leave the way they came (without the expense of paying for smugglers and/or phony documents). Of course this would also involved reducing the illegals' options of legally obstructing enforcement to the same minimal level as Japan & Switzerland.
I, for one, am glad some in Washington are starting to think this way, because unless we intend line this "wall" with minefields, without strict worksite enforcement, it will prove to be another Maginot Line.
Sensenbrenner for president
Go Jim!!!
The Clinton Administration applied their famous "don't ask -- don't tell" strategy to the 1993 Federal Motor Voter law's implementation by warning Motor Vehicle Department employees not to ask if an applicant is a citizen or tell them that non-citizens cannot vote. Under the Motor Voter law, anyone [Motor Vehicle Department employees included] who "knowingly and willfully intimidates, threatens, or coerces, or attempts to intimidate, threaten, or coerce, any person for registering to vote, or voting, or attempting to register or vote" violates federal law. Hence, the hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens, visa overstayers and others classified as "refugees" who were granted amnesty or asylum by the Clinton Administration could all have been illegal voters......
GET THE WORD TO SENSENBRENNER---REPEAL THE MOTOR VOTER LAW
"In reality, the House bill would bring U.S. immigration law more into line with most countries," added Chairman Sensenbrenner."
POW!
Well of course enforcement works... SO DOES DEPORTATION.
