Bush Ends Goss's Stormy Tenure By Forcing Him Out as CIA Chief
Washinghton Post ^ | 5/6/06 | Dafna Linzer and Walter Pincus

Posted on 05/05/2006 8:21:37 PM PDT by hipaatwo

Porter J. Goss was forced to step down yesterday as CIA director, ending a turbulent 18-month tenure marked by an exodus of some of the agency's top talent and growing White House dissatisfaction with his leadership during a time of war.

Seated next to President Bush in the Oval Office, Goss, a Republican congressman from Florida before he took over the CIA, said he was "stepping aside" but gave no reason for the departure. Bush, who did not name a successor, said he had accepted the resignation and thanked Goss for his service.

"Porter's tenure at the CIA was one of transition, where he's helped this agency become integrated into . . . the intelligence community," Bush said. "That was a tough job, and he's led ably." Bush said he had developed a "very close personal relationship" with Goss, who succeeded George J. Tenet at the agency's helm in September 2004.

But senior administration officials said Bush had lost confidence in Goss, 67, almost from the beginning and decided months ago to replace him. In what was described as a difficult meeting in April with Director of National Intelligence John D. Negroponte, Goss was told to prepare to leave by May, according to several officials with knowledge of the conversation.

"Regrettably, Porter Goss's tenure as director of the CIA was a tumultuous one," said Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), vice chairman of the intelligence panel. "We must have a leader with strong credentials, a demonstrated track record of independence and objectivity, and the ability to bring much needed harmony within the ranks."

There goes the leakers again. Sure wish somebody had the mind and spine to tell us what is really going on, instead of this continuous muddying of the water.

Yep, got to have that harmony. I think it's in the CIA Employee's Contract that they have a right "to not be offended".

Jeez, what is this country coming to.

Dana was on Washington Week tonight emphasizing how Goss was not nice enough to the lifers. He did not realize the importance of "cultivating" relationships... in other words, he stepped on toes and expected people to do their jobs.

It's CIA so not sure how much truth we really are going to get. Of course Pincus and Priest must have used the agents who voted for Kerry for this article. And of course Rand Beers.

I am really disappointed in Bush.

But John D Rockefeller IV performed up to his usual crappy standards. He will shortly leak it all.

I smell a phony story here. If Bush forced him out, why the warm sendoff? I dont recall Paul O'Neill getting that.
Moreover, the tumultwas a sign of Goss' effectiveness at rooting out the troublemakers. Stuck pigs squeal.

While we never know for sure what happens within the CIA, I hope and pray that Goss's tenure was short because he was sent in with one mission: to get some scalps. Once said scalps were gotten, Goss could safely be replaced by someone to rebuild the agency.

Let's hope the pres picks a good soldier for the next CIA head.

LOL...did the mods force you to change the author's and source name???

You had it right the first time~~~

I couldn't believe it today...when right after the announcement...MSNBC had on Dana Priest as their "expert"~

Well, duh, I guess she is the expert, after all she has been told everything that is going on over there by Mary McCarthy...

Wonder if McCarthy also "found" something on Goss...

I wonder if James Baker had anything to do or say about Goss' leaving the CIA? Remember, Baker was called in to help out with Iraq matters recently.

Oh, yes. It's in the handbook, right before "Health Benefits". :))

I was thinking the same thing. I was wondering if perhaps the press and the leakers have mis-underestimated the situation.

Goss was specifically sent to crack heads, knowing it would be a short tenure, his sucessor then makes nice and rebuilds. Bad Cop - Good Cop routine on the CIA.
