The problem is that those borders were drawn more than 80 years ago and now have a long history. Remember when the same thing was said about Yugoslavia, that we should just let it break up into its constituent parts. That was what the Germans said when they recognized Slovania and Croatia. Then all hell broke loose and things are still not settled. You see, the Germans were not prepared to do what was necessary.
Yeah, just like the Greeks and Turks live peaceably on Cyprus.
The only thing that held Yugoslavia together was a communist dictatorship, and the only thing holding Iraq togethe was another dictator.
We are either need to install another strongman, or let the will of the people prevail. If they Kurds and the Shia wish not to be ruled from Bhagdhad, are we going to supress them ?
That's why Tito wanted people to think, which is why he played one side against the other.
Thats not a long term strategy, it might work for the dictator, but what about his sucessor ?
Also the borders do not have a long history, 80 years is the blink of an eye, these ethnic groups have lived on their land for centuries, thousands of years even.
