The foundation rescues horses that no longer have a racing career because of age, performance and injury issues.

That's worth a thousand dollars! :~)

At 15:1, what do you think. Should I bet is straight up, or should I wheel AP and everyone else?

Do you think that AP's position might affect its race?

Strike that last comment. I was thinking AP was further out. 10's pretty good.

Build it and they will come! (I hope everyone got a couple bottles of aged Kentucky Whiskey with purchase too)

Posted: 5/6/2006 11:16:00 AM Churchill sells out of $1,000 mint juleps

The $1,000 Ultimate Mint Julep sold out in 15 minutes on Kentucky Derby (G1) day on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Kentucky-based bourbon maker Woodford Reserve and Chicago-based Levy Restaurants pre-sold half of the 50 available juleps before Saturday with the remaining 25 selling by 8:15 a.m. EDT. Gates opened at 8 a.m.

Dobie Blalock, a sailing enthusiast who is an investor in Woodford Reserve's racing stable, purchased the first drink and received a gold-plated cup marked 1/50 along with her bourbon, mint, sugar, and crushed ice concoction. All proceeds ($50,000) from the sale of the Ultimate Mint Julep will benefit Greener Pastures, a Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation facility located in Cecilton, Maryland.

"Here's to giving back to horses," Blalock said before taking one of 20 sips from the beverage. "They give us so much, and I'm just happy to give back."

Chris Morris, master distiller of Woodford Reserve, and Bob King, director of beverage for Levy Restaurants, made each Ultimate Mint Julep personally.

Mint juleps in the traditional Kentucky Derby glass are available for $9 on Derby day. Morris expects to sell 140,000 of those drinks.—Ed DeRosa

Some combo bets could play off pretty nicely. I'd play mainly with Barbaro at 4-1!

I'm going with Steppenwolfer. Strong closer (after all the other speed demons knock themselves out!)

THANKS! I wish all the FR threads were built as well as this one!
Here's my Derby prognosis, complete with background info:
WAAAYYYY back at the FIRST Derby Futures Pool I bought a small ($10) win ticket on a horse that looked really good to me, considering his 19-1 odds, Barbaro. I believe he had only two races then, maybe he was up to three, but his races looked so good, I couldn't pass up this "value" mini-investment. Since then, he has been winning exclusively, and is now one of the favorites.
I've spend several hours in the last few days studying the past performances and I see some menacing longshots emerging in this HUGE field, ( I really LOVE big Derby fields, because it means MANY horses will be overlooked), and the emergence of such horses always makes for the possiblility of BIG payoffs, notably in the TRI and SUPERFECTA pools.......
The one horse that really and suddenly looks REAL
dangerous to me now is KEYED ENTRY, who might go off at 20-1 or higher. And I would NOT toss out JAZIL or STEPPENWOLFER, either---if any or all of those three come in in a superfecta, even in 2nd 3rd or 4th positions, the payoff is bound to be record-breaking.
HERE are the horses that can safely be thrown out:CAUSE TO BELIEVE, STORM TREASURE, FLASHY BULL,DEPUTY GLITTERS, SEASIDE RETREAT, BLUEGRASS CAT,PRIVATE VOW,SHOWING UP, and YES, ALSO throw out both LAWYER RON, and SINISTER MINISTER.\S.M. ran a very fast fluky time in the Blue Grass, only by virtue of getting and holding onto an uncontested lead. What that indicates is not so much a great horse as an unimportant prep race, (the Blue Grass)/
Can't throw out Brother DEREK, though, or really any of the others. I will play superfectas with BDerek, and BARBARO on top in 1/2 positions, with the 1/2/3 horses teamed up in third and fourth. BOB and JOHN is not out of the question either, as a winner, so I would also put him on top with BD and Barbaro 2nd and the other three horses third and fourth. And I am sure I will do some last minute bets at Nanuet OTB in the waning minutes before post-time that I have not registered here. All depends on the odds.
Good Luck to you all, Derby day is always tremendous fun! I LOVE IT, and it will all be worthwhile even if only BARBARO wins and I cash in my futures ticket for $200!

I'm going with Lawyer Ron (altho I don't much care for the name). His face reminds me of my dog, Cubby! LOL

Good luck to you, and may they all run a great race, and finish safe. :~D

I too always get excited around Derby Day, I love the horses, of course, as any horsewoman would, and I don't much follow racing the rest of the year, but I do always get excited about the Triple Crown.

I remember my first Triple Crown, Seattle Slew, as a little kid from Washington State, I felt like I had part ownership in him from his name, and I was in tears a few years ago when he died on Derby Day.
