BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition forces detained five suspects and killed an unknown number of terrorists May 5 in a series of raids at approximately 6 p.m. in the vicinity of Samarra. As the troops moved to intercept a vehicle occupied by three suspected al-Qaida associates, the assault force simultaneously took small arms fire from a nearby house. While the troops positioned to stop the car, armed men exited the house, two carrying shoulder-fired rocket launchers and one firing a light machine gun. The forces quickly neutralized the threat emanating from the structure, located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Samarra, with small arms and rockets fired from supporting aircraft.
The troops then detained the three suspects located in the vehicle, finding two AK-47s, ammunition, two improvised grenades and one hand grenade.
The forces were then provided another location of a second, related vehicle occupied by suspected al-Qaida associates; two more detainees were taken after the troops stopped the vehicle approximately 15 kilometers east of the first intercepted automobile.
Troops later searched the safe house discovering mortar rounds and grenades.
One of the five suspects detained is believed to be a senior al-Qaida associate. All are currently being questioned for their level and involvement in terrorist activity.
"The forces quickly neutralized the threat..."
I just love it when they do that.
Whoops there=their.
Since the media never misses an opportunity to report bad news, I must assume that the good guys had no casualties (thank God!).
Job well done, troops!
Cleaning out the rat's nests, one at a time..
BumP!
Yeah, Unc, if they're dead I honestly can't see them improving their combat skills very much. ;-)
This again seems to fit the pattern of TF 145 as described by the AT article. One raid, followed quickly by another.
Yea coop. Know what ya mean. If only all America read a lot of the articles we get, they would start to understand a bit what GWB means by kill them over there so we don't have to do it on American soil.
Dev when you ping someone you need to place a comment in the box...:-)
I heard this reported in the noon hour on my way home from work....it was CBS and all they said was three insurgents nabbed near Samarra.
MANPADS..
I see it now these raids took place on the 5th....I need to start reading these articles...:-)
You need to take one of those speed reading courses that teach you how to read War and Peace in 30 minutes and still remember what Pierre Bezukhov said to the servant in chapter 15 . . .
The PA guys do get this information out, but this time the delay was for a day or two. It may be reasonable to surmise that the operation had the prospect of cascading into more immediate raids, and the release was delayed.
..one of these days we will get that evil ...you know what.
US to send CIA officials to fight Al-Qaeda remnants in Chitral
Chitral is in the area of Operation Mountain Lion activities. STRATFOR had this to say a few weeks' back:
On April 16, the Pakistani newspaper Daily Times cited sources in the Dir civil administration in a report that paramilitary soldiers, whose exact numbers were not revealed, were being deployed along the border from the Lower Dir to Upper Dir and Chitral districts overlooking Kunar. Another Pakistani daily, the Dawn, quoted sources in Bajaur agency's Mamond, Chaharmang and Salarzai areas as saying that security forces were setting up checkpoints along unfrequented routs in the border areas of Bajaur.
