Young viewers just don't watch The O'Reilly Factor like they used to. April marked Bill O'Reilly's lowest-rated month in the 25-54 demographic since August 2001.
His 415,000 demo viewers in March was a new low, but O'Reilly managed to lose a few more in April, averaging 412,000 in the demo. Here's his post-Katrina track:
Sept: 1,115 / Oct: 518 / Nov: 468 / Dec: 460 / Jan: 472 / Feb: 458 / Mar: 415
But this trend started long before the hurricane. for O'Reilly, April's numbers reflected his lowest demo rating in almost five years.
Among total viewers, O'Reilly delivered a respectable 2,102,000 million viewers for the month. But that, too, was low -- the lowest, in fact, since July of 2004 (when he had 2,042,000). Click continued to feast your eyes on O'Reilly's monthly averages since 2001...
> Update: 7:03pm: An e-mailer says: "O'Reilly has had over two million people watching his show consecutively for almost a year? That's astounding. My question for you is, who has beaten O'Reilly in that 25-54 demo? Unitl somebody does, his lower #'s probably reflect less news than last year. He's still the undisputed king."
If the pompous ass had any competition at all he would never have the first slot...
Who?
I would imagine that the cable news shows rating go down unless there is some great event. I would tend to think that rating for these shows would go up during election seasons and down whenever there is not an election. Also, when these cable news programs dedicate half their shows to the Duke Lacrosse team and the missing blonde of the month people just get tired of that.
Exactly. FOX News has always been full of tabloid crap (with few exceptions). But the Factor has become laughable in the past year or so.
I bet CNN, MSNBC and the rest wish that they had Fox News ratings
Bill O'Reilly's show is becoming a bit repetitive, as has Greta's:
Greta keeps her predictable focus on a handful of over-covered high profile legal cases like the missing blond girl in Aruba, the same four experts arguing the same points endlessly, day after day. And the Duke stipper case. Same points endlessly, day after day.
Bill has become a one-man crusader against child molesters.
Not that that's a bad thing to be, but it gets old. And it's the last thing your average 25 year old wants to watch!
It's child molesters, or carrying on about the words "pithy" and "popinjay".
Both of them need to mix it up a bit more. They're getting lazy, IMHO. And that's two hours in primetime when many viewers have returned home from work, without any hard news, at all!! Just predictable formula stuff.
Can't stand CNN for more than about 3 minutes at a time, but find myself wishing more and more, there was a second Fox, to keep the first one innovating and hungry.
Well, when you compare The Factor to Olberman's show... it looks marvelous.
Mr Bill makes me think of the movie Nell? Tway in da win ...Tway in da wind.
We have those on the extreme left and the extreme right. O'Reilly is an extreme moderate.
Talk about damning with faint praise ...
I'm 25, but I can't say I've ever watched a full O'Reilly show.
I'd rather watch ESPN :)
But you're right - BOR needs to get out of the studio and tour the parts of the country that real people live in, instead of sitting in his studio and being an insider. Term limits for broadcasters?
And Greta just needs to go away, and take the Hannity and Colmes WWF show with her.
That's just it. Until someone else has the clarity to expose the left as they are, he'll have no competition. I don't agree with him on all things, but he calls the left out better than anybody on tv.
It's so odd to hear anyone going on about this guy. I absolutely refuse to read watch or listen to him.
He's a self-admitted jive merchant in the "Infotainment Business". He does'nt care for or believe in anything except ratings...Period.
Plus, he's got mean little beady eyes. He really is not a nice man. ( He actually could be John McCains dead brother.)
You are exactly right. If there is someone out there who can beat out O'Reilly give him a shot at it. Hmm, Al Franken, nah, Al Gore, nah, James Carville, nah. Oh well, as bad as many seem to think O'Reilly is he still gets the ratings. Go figure, will ya!
Actually O'Reilly is beating the pants off all the other cable shows.
May 4th: O'Reilly had 456K viewers in the 25-40 demo, which *trounced" all his competition. Paula Zahn had 193K on CNN; Countdown on MSNBC had 141K; Nancy Grace on Headline 126K; CNBC had the closest audience at 206K.
Overall viewership: O'Reilly had three times the viewers of any competitor. 2.2 million, vs 696 thousand for Zahn; MSNBC and HLN were even worse.
But still he could stand to stray outside his box a bit more.
I never really understood all the excitement about Greta - she's obviously a very bright person, but I just can't get all worked up about lawyers.
Hannity and Combes in my opinion, is the only show of the three, which is genuinely challenging and fun.
Olderwomann has higher ratings than Chrissy Matthews.
Oops, sorry that's the 25-54 demo. Can't type for beans. :)
You re-state my point... ;)
There's much better news commentary on the radio on weekday evenings than on TV. I'd take Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham over anything on Fox from 8 to 10.
They're all hacks IMO.
O'Reilly lost me with the price gouging. Approving of the "windfall profit" tax. Whatever.
Hannity makes up his mind and then shuts it down to any reasoning that might be made available afterwards.
Hell, even Neal Boortz will take an opinion to heart if you have facts to back it up.
In the name of conservatism, you HAVE to have an open mind, determine what is fact and what is fiction and make a decision.
He needs a new phone sex scandal to pump up the ratings amongst college kids again.
Thats not saying much, both shows suck!
Perhaps The O Factor's numbers have slipped, but that probably means, so did everyone else's.
My gosh, even Hannity and Communist are following in the wake of Gristle von Ugly.
I almost couldn't believe that the most important news of the week centered around the Duke lacrosse team. But H&C obviously thought it was.
Besides the fact he's a rude boor, I find the constant self promotion offensive. He hucks his latest book, his premium website, his Factor Gear, his radio program, etc. It's a solid hour of O'Reilly selling himself. I know some of his profits go to charity, but he even has to toot his own horn about his charitable contributions. It's tacky. This goes on all over Fox and in my opinion it's tasteless and unprofessional.
Just noticed something (very) interesting at the TV Newser site.
Guess who's going to be the first CNN prime show host, to beat Fox News?
He's the only MSM reporter anywhere, loudly and stubbornly out there advocating secure borders. And he's gaining viewership on Brit Hume. Now leading (#1), in the 25-54 demo.
Lou Dobs:

Meanwhile CNN viewership is down 38% during the last year. :)

>>But the Factor has become laughable in the past year or so.
Sorry, that is incorrect. It has been laughable for at least 2-3 years, and completely due to the ever-expanding head of Bill O'Reilly. I'm surprised it fits in the studio.
I have come to hate FOX just like I hate CNN. I don't even watch the news anymore.
I was with ya until that last sentence. H&C is unwatchable. H is too self-righteous. C is just a plain slimeball.
Bill O jumped the shark when he interviewed Jenna Jameson
The FACTOR...laughable?!?!?
Are you forgetting how the "FACTOR investigative team" really gets to the bottom of things???
BO is a populist blowhard extraordinaire! How ~can~ you be dissin' him???
Why I even heard the Newtster sucking up to him the other night! (Too bad. Newt may be smart, but if you don't have enough character to cross to the other side of the street when you see BO coming, you are NOT my man!)
I use to send emails to BO with helpful hints (like "stick your loud, ignorant, opportunistic head in a toilet") but now my emails just get returned with an indication that they are not accepted by the remote PO. Must be one of those filter things.
What was compelling with O'Reilly when he started was that unlike the typical TV journalist, more like a litigating attorney, he followed up on answers, even for a third, fourth and further tries.
Unfortunately what became quickly obvious is that he is both ignorant and often just plain stupid and too pompous to recognize either fact.
Who watches this guy???
I agree, he has no competition.
MSNBC has incompetent managment to scuttle the ENTIRE PMSNBC staff and model and start from 100% scratch. (seriously to the suits at PMSNBC, fire EVERYONE in front and behind the camera. no mercy)
CNN is too far gone to every recover. They don't serve the USA they serve the anti-americans of the world.

What's the reason for Brit Hume's huge decline? I watch every night. Though I ignore the Duke stuff. I don't know why he invests so much on-air time to it. It doesn't deserve 5 seconds.
Mac! Old dear.
We gotta get you outta that castle...brooding about...full of stum und drang.
We're going to fill your heart with the "Sunshine of the Spirit" and lots of gladness.
Have to give BOR credit for going after ACLU, pedophiles, corrupt judges, Rev. Jesse Jackson (who is too scared to appear on his show). Not many in the media dare to tackle these issues. And he can be interesting.
What I don't understand is why his many of his critics keep referring to him as a conservative. There is one lefty talk show host - her name escapes me at the moment - who goes into a frenzy over BOR and keeps repeating the same inane slurs against him. Either BOR is too effective in his critique of ACLU and pedophiles or he dumped her in the past. Whatever, she is one bitter woman.
Compared with the competition, BOR is the best in his time slot. If you want something fluff and tabloid, try to watch Rita's show on MSNBS.
For those bitter about Fox, BOR and TV news in general, I recommend Brit Hume and Lou Dobbs.
For me, a new low - in every sense of the word - was when he announced that the Scriptures say that "slavery is okay."
FNC has zero competition ZIP nada.
The competition is simply too incompetent both in front, behind the camera, and in their offices to put any kind of credible alternative.
CNN is just too plain intelectually limited to understand they are totally uttlerly biased. See how dan rather remains the only person on the planet who thinks the guard docs are real.
