Well, well. We're hearing from the Susan B. Anthony brigade again. What a surprise. She was a Republican, too, after she was against Republicans and before she was against them again. After she faked being a Republican for a while, she traveled with George Train (notorious Democrat) to advocate in favor of slavery. She even refused, after being asked, to speak out against lynching.
The point is that many Democrats have and continue to pretend to be Republicans, when it suits their purpose. And some of their most sacred cows were hateful hypocrites.

Not that it matters, but they said "conservative" not "Republican".
It's a philosophy versus a party. Two different things.
