But do you have the votes? Do you really have enough "pure" conservatives out there who are just waiting for their knight to appear? Last year Bush tried to reform social security, but the public said, NO. There are too many middle-class conservatives who have planned their retirement on a government pension. There are too many "conservatives" who want their own bridge to nowhere. There are too many who grumble about the tax code but don't want their favoite loophole closed. So, do you have the votes?

Let's just start with the borders. The overwhelming majority of the voters want it secured. Politiicians throughout both parties all say they want it secured. And yet, nothing happens, because they insist on making it contingent on amnesty, instead of securing the border first before moving on to amnesty. So it can't be that hard for a candidate who intends to do the right thing on the border to get votes.
