U.S. Senate leaders clear path for immigration bill

Thu May 11, 2006 12:32 PM ET

WASHINGTON, May 11 (Reuters) - Republican and Democratic Senate leaders agreed on Thursday on a plan to revive a bill that would give millions of illegal immigrants a chance to earn U.S. citizenship.

The sweeping immigration overhaul, which has triggered rallies by millions of immigrants and their supporters across the country, is expected to be considered by the Senate next week.

Despite the agreement between Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, the outcome of the legislation remains in doubt. It faces opposition from some Republicans who say it gives amnesty to people who broke U.S. laws.

Frist said opponents now will be allowed to offer "a considerable number of amendments" to the bill. In return, Democrats won an assurance that the bill's backers will have a input in eventual negotiations with the U.S. House of Representatives.

The House passed a tough border security bill that would further criminalize illegal presence in the United States and the two bills will have to be merged.

The House bill, which would make illegal presence a felony instead of a civil offense, has drawn huge protests around the country from Hispanic groups and their supporters.

Frist said he wants the Senate to finish work on the bill by the end of the month when Congress takes a week-long break for the Memorial Day holiday.

The legislation stalled just before Congress' Easter break last month when Democrats, worried that Republican opponents would try to gut the bill, blocked consideration of amendments and sought to limit their number. Even though some of those amendments now will go forward, backers feel they have the votes to defeat them.

Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat who has been pushing for the bipartisan immigration overhaul, said he was optimistic the Senate would pass the bill, which also includes a guest worker program backed by President George W. Bush.

"Today's agreement is a major step forward in our fight for tough but fair immigration reform," Kennedy said.

The Senate bill includes border security and enforcement measures, but also addresses the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. Millions would be given a chance to earn citizenship. The bill also includes a temporary worker program backed by President George W. Bush.

What use are new laws when there is no will to enforce the existing laws?

My point is Mexicans have proved themselves to be loyal Americans.

Some have and some have not.

Some Muslims have proved themselves to be loyal Americans, some have not.

Some Chinese have proved themselves to be loyal Americans, some have not.

Some Christians have proved themselves to be loyal Americans, some have not.

Some Namibians have proved themselves to be loyal Americans, some have not.

Some Southern Baptist have proved themselves to be loyal Americans, some have not.

A persons country of origin or religion have nothing to do with them being a loyal American.

New laws convince the sheep that something is being done.

First, people might have core issues, but there it would appear that some on this board are single issue voters. For example, unless the GOP approves a bill that does everything they want they will stay home, withhold money from the GOP or cheer on the demise of the party.

That is a short-sighted strategy.

Second, I would disagree about your assessment on Democrats. I am a social conservative and know many others. I doubt that any of us would vote Democrat if they suddenly were transformed into a socially conservative party. Defense, foreign policy and tax policy are also very important to us.

Bottom line: you might feel good about being a single issue voter, but it is a faulty political framework.

Adios

Have you learned Spanish? It may be a good idea to get started.

Spanish? Get serious. There are at least a half billion Chinese that are worse off than Mexicans and Latin Americans.

The War on Snakeheads - The Mexican border isn't only front in the struggle with illegal immigration

CHINESE call the United States the Golden Mountain. Most Chinese smuggled into America come from rural villages in Fujian Province on the country's southeast coast, across the Formosa Strait from Taiwan.

Unless you're a xenophobic racist you'll want to welcome them in with a rendition of "America the Beautiful" in Cantonese. And Mandarin. And Mongolian.

The one thing I truly love about FR is that no matter what question you ask you will eventually (and often quickly as in this case) get the answer. ;^)

I do vol. work with new POLITICAL Cuban refugees. Help them get settled, jobs, housing and so on. They are under the protection of the Justice Dept. All of the ones I have met are extremely greatful to the US and want to become Americans. They push their children to learn English and obey the rules. Comparing them to illegals is out of line. This iilegal/legal debate should not have anything to do with race. The fact that most of the illegals are from Mexico doesnt mean anything. DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS!

Muslims want to kill Americans. Most Mexicans don't,

Marine Inspector: More Americans have been killed by Mexicans, then Muslims!

In how many years? And I think that is a ridiculous thing to say, especially from someone like you.

BTW, how many Mexicans are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan?

The Gangster Disciples, Latin Kings and Vice Lords were born decades ago in Chicago's most violent neighborhoods. Now, their gang graffiti is showing up 6,400 miles away in one of the world's most dangerous neighborhoods -- Iraq.

"I have identified 320 soldiers as gang members from April 2002 to present," said Scott Barfield, a Defense Department gang detective at Fort Lewis in Washington state. "I think that's the tip of the iceberg." (snip)

Congressman Steve King - Iowa, Fifth District

Biting the Hand That Feeds You - April 25, 2006

What would that May 1st look like without illegal immigration? There would be no one to smuggle across our southern border the heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamines that plague the United States, reducing the U.S. supply of meth that day by 80%. The lives of 12 U.S. citizens would be saved who otherwise die a violent death at the hands of murderous illegal aliens each day. Another 13 Americans would survive who are otherwise killed each day by uninsured drunk driving illegals.

Our hospital emergency rooms would not be flooded with everything from gunshot wounds, to anchor babies, to imported diseases to hangnails, giving American citizens the day off from standing in line behind illegals. Eight American children would not suffer the horror as a victim of a sex crime.(snip)

When I was in the Marines, I had gang members in many of my units.

Most were guys trying to get out of the gang life and make something of themselves, but some just could not get the gang lifestyle out of their systems.

After they get amnesty, the 20 million new Democrats will show how silly the "Support Republicans even if they're selling out our Country" crowd has been. Republicans, if the party can even survive, will be in permanent minority status.

Exactly, and that's going to screw conservatives until the end of time. I have a little surprise for the RATS though. La Raza, MEChA and other militant Mexican organizations plan to put Mexicans into office as soon as they can. It's Reconquista time. Reid, Boxer, Feinstein, all of them can kiss their jobs goodbye. That would be a silver lining to this invasion, but THAT still wouldn't be worth it. They are going to turn us into the same hell hole that Mexico is. When an illiterate people are calling the shots, we're in deep trouble. I am NOT against any Hispanic Americans. Most of them feel the same way about this as we do. They know they'll be in the same boat we are. I'm NOT against ANY race. What I am against is an invasion from another country who seeks to subvert our government and install their own.

Warning: anyone responding to post made by [ mic9852 ] on any type of 'illegal immigration thread is wasting their collective breath. This woman is the queen of 'open borders' and there is No way to convince her otherwise.

(This is not a personal attack, just an effort to quell monotony within these threads)

Demagogic posts provide an opportunity to respond by adding information and clarity to a subject that contrasts positively. Since many read the one is unimportant.

Guys, you are out of control over a headline.

Would anyone refuse illegals the path to citizenship if they are fined, put in jail awaiting deportation, deported, get in line and re-enter legally? Especially if they have 5 US citizen children in the US? Who would deny that person the path to citizenship -- which requires, btw, that they learn English at the age of 45+ (no easy task).
