Why do they do this?
They could just make up their own religion, or they could decide to be atheists and simply cease to care about Christianity or any other religion whilst they went about their business - it isn't as though Torquemada's around anymore to jam a red hot poker up their ass to teach them the errors of their ways. So why do they expend such energy to try and argue from WITHIN Christianity?

No, it isn't.
We do not have a clue how the human mind works, at all.
Sexual desires are very complicated thought processes, and we don't know what "thought" is.
We don't even know if it is organic and purely chemical, or something that cannot be chemically explained. Our understanding of the mind is in its infancy.
"Sexual identity" is an extremely complex, higher-order thought process. We don't understand thought itself, much less extremly complex, higher-order thought. Given that, to state that a future complex higher-order thought pattern is established "starting at about 6 weeks after conception" is absurd. It asserts knowledge and a level of precision about the human mind that we are not close to possessing.
Truth is, we don't understand why some people act this way and apparently think this way. We don't understand thought at all, and so we CAN'T start assigning causality to something we don't have any good reason to believe is cause-and-effect.
It's cause that one's got it coming out from the inside.
