The FBI has established a Website to make it easier for the public to pass along tips on corrupt government officials, FBI Director Robert Mueller said Thursday.
More than 1,000 corrupt government employees have been convicted in the last two years as a result of FBI investigations, many of which begin with tips, Mueller said.
While there are 2,200 federal, state and local public corruption cases pending, Mueller said even more went unreported out of indifference, fear of retribution or because witnesses were unsure what to do with the information.
"There is a growing intolerance by the American people of public corruption - an intolerance reflected in the willingness to come forward and report abuse of public office," he said.
Members of the public can now submit tips through the Internet at reportcorruption.fbi.gov.
Public corruption became the FBI's top criminal investigative priority following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Mueller said during a speech in San Diego, a city that he said showed the results of the FBI's focus on wrongdoing by elected officials.
Former San Diego-area U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham pleaded guilty last year to accepting $2.4 million in bribes from defense contractors in return for government contracts. Cunningham was sentenced in March to more than eight years in prison.
FBI investigations also led to the conviction of a former city councilman and the indictment of several former members and officials of the board overseeing San Diego's pension fund, which is $1.4 billion in deficit.
Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Tennessee and Connecticut have also recently seen significant investigations and prosecutions of public corruption.
Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan was convicted last month of a pattern of fraud committed in office and former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy, mail fraud, and tax evasion.
"It does not matter if it is a big city or a small town," Mueller said. "It does not matter if it is millions of dollars or just hundreds of dollars. There is no level of 'acceptable' corruption."
Just ask for Hillary's Rolodex
government = corruption
They have a big task. Good luck.
Wow, I bet the government unions don't like this much.
Hope they fire a whole bunch of crooked ones.
I'm very happy to hear this.
I expect a lot of everyone in our govt. from mailmen to presidents.
Well that should take care of the DU website.
I wonder how specific the tips have to be?
I know a certain public center that has more employees than parking spaces.... come 2pm Firday, you can park right near the entrance. I know it's not all vacation time either- it's people cutting out early for the weekend and saying they did their time.
I thought about telling our local news channel, so maybe they can catch people walking out and ask them why they are leaving so early...
Do they have to be Republicans like those mentioned in the article or can we report DemocRATS too?
Lets see the names... Hillary Clinton,Sandy Berger , Cynthia McKinney come to mind....
yea How about going afterthe open corruption in LAke County IN????
LOL....just send them The Clinton's name and addresses....
