Now part of TV history can be yours

07:46 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 By ERIC RIDDLE / Evening Magazine

Remember the TV show "Northern Exposure"? The show was about the residents of a quirky, little town in Alaska. s.

Northern Exposure began as a replacement series in the summer of 1990 and became a cult hit and part of Northwest history.

The show gave viewers a surreal look at life in a remote Alaskan town called Cicely.

The show had plenty of stars, but for folks in the Northwest, the real leading lady was the town of Rosyln where most of the show was shot.

Not a lot has changed in Rosyln since the show left, but for the faithful followers that can't let the show go, some locals are offering you the chance not just to see, but to own part of the program.

Larry Nigar and his wife Wanda own "The Brick," one of Washington's oldest bars and a central location for the show.

"I never thought I'd ever want to own a bar, but I wanted to own this one," he said. "We watched it a little bit, but after we bought the bar we really got into it."

The two bought the bar back in 1997. Now they want to retire. So The Brick is on the block.

From the beautiful bar to the dance floor, 100 years of Roslyn history and TV highlights could be yours. It even comes with its own ghost.

"Some people have actually seen something – a cowboy or a little girl. The piano has played by itself, doors open, lights go off and on, little things like that," said Larry.

Since most believe The Brick is the heart of Roslyn, the Nigars want potential buyers not to mess with a good thing.

"We hope whoever does will respect it for what it is – a historical building and the whole atmosphere and just keeps it going," he said.

Another piece of Cicely, or Roslyn, is for sale right down the street – it's Dr. Joel Fleischman's office.

For five years, Rob Morrow's character saw patients there. Now it's home to the "Cicely's Gift Shop" and its owner Marianne Ojurovich.

Marianne too would like to retire and though she doesn't have a buyer yet, she has an idea of who it might be.

"I think it's going to be a Northern Exposure fan, someone who really loved the show and we do have people who really love it," she said.

So how much are these two TV icons going for?

You can get Fleischman's office for $1.5 million and you could own one of the most famous bars in TV history for $4.2 million.

So if reruns only make you long for more Northern Exposure, you're in luck. For the right price, you can become a citizen of Cicely and Roslyn for life.

When I and my wife first got together and bought the house, we loved staying up Monday evenings and watching it.

Making up big snack trays with crackers and cheese and pickles! Half a bottle of Cabernet.

Memories. Beautiful and painful.

She couldn't believe it when I took her camping up near Cle Elum and we drove thru Roslyn. Even in early June, there was still a bit of snow at 2000 feet, so she stuck my beers in it. I still have pictures.

My recommendation to the younger set.
Don't ever fall in love.

Ah, "Northern Exposure", otherwise known 'round these parts as "The Janine Turner Show"

She's a one of a kind, and a class act.

Oh, sweetheart...

I was going to post some platitudes...

I got up about three years ago and drove out to Roslyn...on that small stretch of road I saw a herd of elk...I pulled off and just sat...me and the elk and the sun coming up....

Hair...I was having a very bad day...please forgive.

I've seen lots of Elk in that region, but mostly south of there on the other side of 90 like at Stampede Pass. Don't know if you can even get in there anymore.

I admit, I'm a newbie...I only moved here 16 years ago...but the elk used to move along I-90 between here and the Pass.

You had to be up early...but I would see them.

That was definitely a weird show, and got weirder with time. The ice break show, the running of the bulls, the circumcism, the battle of two old men for the love of a young girl less than half their age......

It was avante garde for the time....but pretty tame by today's standards. A show worth watching and quite entertaining!

Did you ever visit Roslyn while you lived in Washington? I haven't seem much of WA, but - believe it or not - I've been to Roslyn. We were big fans of Northern Exposure at the time... even had our pic taken in front of "Roslyn's Cafe" (above). I remember driving pretty far out of our way just to see this place...LOL. It was a quirky, fairly interesting little town, I guess. Not like anything I had ever seen on the east coast...

Lucky lucky you! Does your wife have an identical twin younger sister in Northern California?

Janine Turner was the female lead in "Northern Exposure", playing brush pilot Maggie O'Connell. About the only other things I remember her being in were "Cliffhanger" (a Sly Stallone action picture), and Chevrolet ads a few years back.

Actually, to turn this into a true FReeper thread, she was engaged to Alec Baldwin back in 1983, but had the good sense not to marry the chump.
