So what happens when we find a teacher with an unpopular viewpoint--in this case about slavery--and he DOESN'T pass it on?

He says he doesn't, but he does. He was fired from a previous school for flying a Confederate flag in his classroom, after parents asked him repeatedly to remove it.

Agreed.

Being from the south, I find that anytime slavery is mentioned that many people tend have a knee-jerk reaction to reject any fact that is brought foward... I'm not claiming this guy has facts, just the point that it's a sore spot to be prodding around in.

Did you know that the Scotch-Irish were one of the first races to be used as slaves? It was very easy for them to disguise themselves among other whites to not be recognized.

The fact that they were easily recognizable (compared to white men), along with hearty immune systems is what led blacks to be the primary race for slavery in the south.

Let me reiterate, I never agreed with it, but I find the topic very interesting.

I agree that it's a personal decision whether you succeed or not.. not a racial one. I'm glad that everyone has the same ability to achieve in the US.

"Yes," said McCuen. "In America there was a rational assessment saying listen, if we give these people freedom right as they are and you have to go back to see how they were, you can't assume they were like us.

I think that he was being interviewed and spoke that sentence.

"We got off subject one day and he mentioned that slavery happened and he mentioned the Vice-President around Andrew Jackson's time, and that's how we got off on slavery," said 9th-grader Candace Carol. The Vice-President she was referring to is John C. Calhoun; someone Winston McCuen admires

This is the reason the guy got fired?

I don't think so. Some of this story is missing.

The big question is that if McCuen got fired for his out of the classroom, politically incorrect views and posting comments on controversial websites, then those of us on FR need to be concerned about our jobs.

That is secondary to the fact that they were almost exclusively the only race being sold in the Atlantic Rim at the time.

I got my handle SMUG, from a waitress at that very restaurant. I was commenting that one of the pigs painted on the front of the building looked rather smug. From that day forward she would call me smug. Tain't got nuttin ta do with my attitude (maybe).

What's most interesting to me are the differences in results of tests that have no virtually no verbal/math/cultural component, such as measuring times to react to light changes and times to move to press another button.

I see that you are right, he spoke the sentence. Nevertheless I find no meaning in it.

I've never been inside that Maurice's, but I've driven by it enough. I went to his little place up on St. Andrews Road near I-26 a couple times. Decent enough Carolina BBQ.
