Murtha speech gets cheers and jeers

By Richard Robbins

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Sunday, May 14, 2006

U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha -- one of the most vocal critics of President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq -- drew cheers and boos during his commencement speech at Seton Hill University on Saturday when he once again called for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops.

"We don't care. This isn't about graduation," Leonard Pierce, of North Huntingdon, the parent of a graduate, called out several times from the audience.

The catcalls prompted shouts from other audience members that Murtha should be allowed to speak. The back-and-forth was clearly audible inside the Katherine Mabis McKenna Center on the Greensburg campus. The small, liberal arts Catholic university is in the heart of Murtha's 12th Congressional District, which he has represented since 1974.

Murtha ignored the brief disruption. Later, he dismissed the heckling as of no great consequence. One student, on his way to get his diploma, told the congressman that graduation was not the place to air the war issue, Murtha said.

"I told him, 'This is America, not Russia,' " Murtha said.

Now that pic is worth a thousand words. Murtha is just another cowardly lion lib with a chicken little mentality.

Looks like this young man calls 'em as he sees 'em. I love a few good men.... shitbird -- Military slang. A shitbird was a guy who slept on watch, stole from his buddies, offended the Vietnamese and generally shirked his duties.

Irey Speaks to Seton Hill University Students

Greensburg, Pa – This morning, Diana Irey was welcomed by the Seton Hill University College Republicans as she gave an address to students and supporters. Irey spoke about her candidacy for U.S. Congress in the 12th District, and also offered a message to college students about the future as they begin to enter the workforce.

“I was honored to have the opportunity to speak to a wonderful group of young men and women this morning.” Commissioner Irey said. They represent the future of America, and I think it is important to send a message to them that their Congressional leaders should respond to their concerns. That is where my opponent and I differ. While John Murtha has drifted further and further from the views of the 12th District, I will work diligently in Congress to create economic development opportunities that will keep these talented young people here in Pennsylvania, rather than forcing them to seek career opportunities outside of Pennsylvania.” She said.

"I was happy to hear that Diana Irey wanted to speak to Seton Hill students before the commencement ceremonies. She is a great candidate, who supports our troops and offers positive change for the 12th District, our state and our country." commented Mike Rubino, Chairman of the Seton Hill University College Republicans.

Diana Irey has spent the last decade in public service as a Washington County Commissioner, and she is now running to bring her vision of government responsibility, lower taxes, and family values to the United States Congress as the Representative of Pennsylvania’s 12th District.

"Yes sir my name is Mark Seavey and I just want to thank you for coming up here. Until about a month ago I was Sergeant Mark Seavey infantry squad leader, I returned from Afghanistan. My question to you, (applause)

"Like yourself I dropped out of college two years ago to volunteer to go to Afghanistan, and I went and I came back. If I didn't have a herniated disk now I would volunteer to go to Iraq in a second with my troops, three of which have already volunteered to go to Iraq. I keep hearing you say how you talk to the troops and the troops are demoralized, and I really resent that characterization. (applause) The morale of the troops that I talk to is phenomenal, which is why my troops are volunteering to go back, despite the hardships they had to endure in Afghanistan."

Well its a small, small world. I have not had the opportunity to post (or FReep) recently...as my family life and job have been more hectic than usual (as if that is even possible but it has been the case recently)... yesterday was a proud, eventful day in my family as our oldest son graduated from...SETON HILL UNIVERSITY.

We were at the commencement and sat thru Congressman Murtha's diatribe. Murtha's remarks did elicit heckles (back and forth) and as someone who sat there, in the Katherine Mabis McKenna Gym, one half of the graduating class did NOT stand and applaud (maybe 20 percent of the crowd at most). The initial heckler (quote of what heckler #1 said...'its about a graduating class...not your agenda') received a smattering of applause (like those who heard him were thinking the same thoughts). I don't condone heckling and catcalls, but I also greatly resent the circus my son's ceremony turned into (but that is for my private letter writing tomorrow) due to Mr. Murtha vitriol towards the Bush administration. As a constituent in his 14th Congressional District, I feel that that Pennsylvania would have been better served if Mr. Murtha would have tauted how the 'best and brightest' need to make thier future here, in Southwestern PA. Mr. Murtha should have further explained that the jobs and ecomonic growth that he has worked diligently to attain for the Pittsburgh region will keep them here...but wait...his agenda only involves Iraq...and face time with the national media.

I will post any replies I receive from my letters to the Congressman and the University on the circus that was son's graduation day.

FRegards, PaMom

No thanks to the Democrats.

Very true. I was going to rephrase his remark by saying "This is America, not Russia, but were working to make it so! Vote Democrat and remember, we make sure every vote is counted!! Every dead person, every illegal, and every convict! Plus we make sure to throw out that pesky military absentee ballot"

Yet one more glaring reason why the left can never be entrusted with power.

You had to sit through that? I am so sorry. If it was my graduation that was ruined by this appeaser, I would have thrown my cap and gown down and walked out in protest.

That said, I never went to my college graduation. It was scheduled to close to my commissioning ceremony as a 2LT in the Army and, honestly, I could have cared less about listening to the leftist trash spewed forth by the guest speaker and the college administration. I still would love to write the college back and demand a refund for all the leftist general education courses they made me take so I could get an Industrial Engineering degree.

I also greatly resents the circus my son's ceremony turned into...

I am so very sorry that you, your son and all those in attendence had to sit through something like this on a day that should have been all about the graduates.

Vote Diana Irey!
