I've just finished watching an amazing movie about him on Polish TV and couldn't resist from posting something dedicated to this great man.

I always thought that the US would have been better served to publicly offer Poland Statehood..... even if I knew it would be rejected. Sure would have tweaked the noses of the EU and Brussels.

FIGHTING AUSCHWITZ by Jozef Garlinski, published in 1975 has a lot of information about the penetration of Auschwitz by the Polish resistance movement. Used copies of the paperback version are pretty easy to find on the net. I strongly recommend this book.

"interbellum" - there's a term you don't see very often. Thank God we've had only one major conflict fought on our soil.

Yes - what an amazing fellow. Imagine - volunteered for Auschwitz, served as a valuable intelligence operative while there and then escaped from same!

An astonishing brave man: standing for freedom against the National Socialists and the Communists.

When I read accounts such as this, I am always reminded of a line by the ancient Greek poet Pindar: "The long toil of the brave is not lost in darkness." When I am next in Warsaw, I will go to Powazki, seek out his memorial grave, and light a candle.

The Poles have been with us since the beginning. It is to our shame that we chose not to recropricate after we essentially conquered the world.

Thaddeus Kosciuszko, Polish patriot, fortifications engineer for the Continental Army 1776-1783, during his tour of duty for the purpose of constructing fortifications at West Point. From: http://www.revolutionaryday.com/usroute9w/westpoint/

His statue stands at West Point today, as their people stand with the US today. Regardless of our treachery against their very lives, liberties and pursuit of happiness; Poland is a rock solid Christian nation that will fight the evil.

I have a French last name and am ethnically Irish by birth; I have a Pole via a great grandmother who got lucky with a guy from County Kler hanging on within me.

This makes me the classic American Mutt, one who would pi$$ on those who sold out a noble people in the guise of political expedience.

I can rant on this subject further, but will not; out of expedience

And can you imagine that this character (Czeslaw Lapinski, the procecutor, accusing Pilecki and demanding death penalty fo him)

and this one (Jan Hryckowian, the judge, sentencing him for death penalty)

both used to be officers of the Polish underground Home Army during WW2? Just like Pilecki.

Almost beyond my comprehension.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com he looked a hell of a lot better when he was held by the germans than he did by the russians...

i haven't gotten any reply's back from my emails to Dr. Rudolph Verba in a long time and am affraid he has finally expired also. he too was one of the first to escape from Auschwitz and bring word to the west/england. RIP

Konstanty Piekarski 1915-1990, another Fine Man, also survived and here is his outstanding free on line book.

Is there a translation of this into English?

http://members.shaw.ca/escapinghell/witold.htm

I was looking for it, but if there's an English version, I couldn't find it.

Thanks for the Witold Pilecki info.
