One of the names at the top of the list to replace John Dimitri Negroponte as U.S. ambassador to Mexico is that of former Carter administration official Robert A. Pastor.
Pastor is a professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta, and director of the Latin American and Caribbean Program at Emory's Carter Center, named after former President Jimmy Carter.
In 1977-1981, Pastor was director of Latin American Affairs on the National Security Council.
In 1985-86, he was a Fulbright professor at El Colegio de Mexico, a prestigious university and research institute.
The last time I interviewed Pastor, he asked me to send regards to his friend, Mexican Consul General Humberto Hernandez Haddad.
For those interested in learning more about Pastor, I recommend his 1988 book (co-authored with Jorge Castaneda of Mexico), "Limits to Friendship: The United States and Mexico."
