Report from Midtown Manhattan: black as midnight outside and pouring buckets. Wish the tornado would pick up the people lined up for the Da Vinci code.

Was that a Union or non-Union tornado?

It's direction of travel was NNW-

Interesting. It's difficult to see from the photos if it actually touched down. Strange that the 'tail' is not dark and more tapered.

Even more strange that it's traveling to the NNW.

Midwestern tornados typically move out of the West instead of heading West. I will be watching to see if any weather authorities comment on the lack of tapered tail and the absence of darkness in the tail.

I believe a waterspout is simply a tornado over water. I don't think there's a difference beyond that.

There's going to be a severe twister on Long Island on June 11 if anything goes wrong with the wedding arrangements. This one will be a special Trinidadian storm also known as the M-I-L.

;O)

Well basically that's correct except that the waterspout is full of water and they typically fall apart when they hit land.

So about every 4-5 years? I don't remember ever hearing about tornados up that way.

I grew up in Iowa, so tornadoes were a way of life. I don't really miss them much--although I'm not looking forward to earthquakes, either.

"Midwestern tornados typically move out of the West instead of heading West."

Northeastern tornadoes are not familiar with the rules.

Amateurs...

Waterspouts are somewhat rare in the northeast, especially this time of year. This is not really that similar to a big tornado alley type of storm... most likely a cold air funnel with the low pressure system so close by. Waterspouts look like tornadoes, but they are often caused by much more benign storms.

There is a difference. Over water they are always weaker. Always. I have seen literally hundreds of waterspouts, and been within feet of a couple, and they very seldom approach F1 category. That waterspout in the picture would not lift the towing howser off of the deck of the yard tug in the foreground.

That was my home turf for over 30 years, though I wasn't always home. :) Still I'd have heard of any unusual weather. All told I remember seeing ONE and hearing of maybe two or three others in all those years.
One of my uncles worked for the weather bureau, weather was all he knew or ever talked about. A true obsessor. When the one tornado I saw arrived, he was already senile and he snapped right out of it when he saw it. I think he died happy, later that year. It sure was awesome.

Toto,we're not in Teteboro any more

My favorite name is "Mawah." They have cool names in New Jersey... and the straightest toll road on the east coast. It's a nice break in the ride from MA to VA.

No, we think that rules are for midwest tornadoes.

And then it could empty out the Upper West Side (starting with Central Park West) and then move up to Boston,Cambridge,Brookline and Newton,MA.

_______________
LOL. Taking your distaste for Davinci Code a bit far, doncha think?

Say to yourself... it's only a movie.

Freepers seem to want this movie to tank just like the DUers wanted to see The Passion tank. We all know Mel's movie didn't and guess what, DaVinci code won't either.
