We are nation of laws... and that applies to immigrants

BY DAVID LARA

The question put to me by the editor of The Sun was, "What are your feelings concerning the question of illegal immigration?" Actually, the answer is simple, and is answered with another question, "What is it about the word illegal that you don't understand?"

As President Bush stated during his address to the nation Monday evening, America is a nation of laws, and it follows that just as citizens of Arizona must obey the laws of California or Michigan should we travel to those states, so do the laws of the United States apply to any and all who cross our borders and enter our country.

As a Mexican-American, most people might think that I favor open borders and amnesty, especially when they learn that I come from a migrant farm-working family. I do not favor either one.

Illegal immigration is in great part the result of the very real problem of a corrupt Mexican government, a government that portrays illegal immigrants as victims of the terrible American capitalist system while, in reality, the Mexican government takes advantage of the majority of its citizens for the benefit of a few very rich individuals.

Actually, the illegal immigrants are not running to America. They are running away from Mexico, and illegal immigration acts as a safety valve for the corrupt governments from which the immigrants are fleeing and is nothing more than a means of importing poverty into America.

The argument is made that the illegal immigrants provide cheap labor. In fact, there is no such thing as cheap labor. I would much rather pay more for provided services in exchange for affordable health care and lower taxes.

The Yuma Patriots and the Minutemen are not the first civilian groups to patrol our borders. Cesar Chavez, who is now being praised as a hero to the masses, and his United Farm Workers union had what was known as the "night patrol," a branch of the UFW that maintained camps along the U.S.-Mexican border.

It was a group that beat, robbed and sent any potential non-union workers back to Mexico. Old Cesar didn't want any competition for his UFW workforce. Now, for the sake of political gain, the UFW has flip-flopped on the illegal immigrant issue.

We also see some church officials fighting for the rights of illegals, endorsing amnesty. These leaders, especially those connected with the interfaith movement, see our immigration laws as the reason that more than 300 deaths have occurred in the Arizona desert. Why don't they turn some of that rage against the Mexican government that encourages its citizens to cross miles of dangerous desert?

Finally, what about the many immigrants who came into this country legally? These people are trying to do it the right way, according to the law. Amnesty tells the illegal immigrant that the law doesn't matter. In fact, amnesty tells the illegal that he will be rewarded if he doesn't follow the rules. What a wonderful example that sets for our society as a whole.

Remember, we are a nation of laws, and as a society we must act in accordance with the rule of law. To do otherwise ignores the ideals of our nation's forefathers, and diminishes the many sacrifices of the immigrants who helped build this nation by respecting those laws.

There are several solutions to the Mexican refugee problem. One is to set up a buffer state (in the 6 border states in Mexico) under American protection to which the oppressed may flee.

Another is to simply undertake a total conquest of Mexico and give some Americans jobs Mexicans won't do.

The alternative of simply letting in 189 million Mexicans is not viable.

I agree that we (the US) should find a way to "Marshalize" at least one of the Mexican border states. Remove the current office occupants, install a new legal system, secure the borders invite/kick out out any and all troublemakers and admit in a controllled fashion all those Mexicans who want to become Conservatives.

Keep dreaming.

It's sad that a president feels it's necessary to even say that. Hey, Mr. President, who are you trying to convice, because you convinced me a long time ago.

Looks like we were wrong. There are no laws. The United States Senate tells me so.

"Cesar Chavez, who is now being praised as a hero to the masses..."

In early 1959, Fidel Castro and Che Guevera were regarded as heroes by the lower classes and the poor. In 2006 Cesar Chavez is being praised by the lower classes and the poor because Chavez is going to give them all the rights that the rich enjoy. I think Juan and Evita Peron went thru this same cycle in Argentina where the people still spit on their names.

By 1962, many Cubans were trying to escape to the U.S. This exact same thing happened in Viet Nam after the Commies "won" (following the Democratz withdrawl of funding) in the latter 70's. I. e., 'I don't care where I go or even if I survive, I just want to leave this terrible place.'

The pestilence of Communism/Socialism is going to be around for a long, long time. God help us.

"...just as citizens of Arizona must obey the laws of California or Michigan should we travel to those states..."

Our governor in Michigan is a communist and we do our best to ignore whatever she wants, including all laws, decrees and dictates she favors. We invite you to do the same should you find yourself in our formerly fair state.

Our communist Berkely governor is currently in Japan begging for jobs. We expect the Marxist to return with a bag of sushi for the alley cats as she did last time.

Should you have any questions on the matter of properly comporting yourself in the state of Michigan, please refer to our guide: "Governing Michigan With Half the Brains of a Gnat."

We WERE a nation of laws. No longer.

Now we are a nation of WHORES. Whores elected and paid with tax dollars.

What was once "the world's greatest deliberative body" is now a den of prostitutes and panderers -- selling first our tax dollars, then our freedoms, and now American citizenship -- in exchange for votes and campaign contributions.

They are despicable.

. . . and the House isn't much better.

Except I'm not sure of any reason we would want the very southern portion of Mexico.
