Report: Ozone Hole May Disappear by 2050
Sat May 20, 9:01 AM ET

TOKYO - The ozone hole over the Antarctic is likely to begin contracting in the future and may disappear by 2050 because of a reduction in the release of chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting gases, according to a team of Japanese scientists.

The findings are based on a series of numerical simulations carried out by Eiji Akiyoshi of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, near Tokyo, using projected emissions of chlorofluorocarbons and other gases blamed for the ozone hole.

According to a report posted Friday on the institute's Web site, the hole is at its largest now but is likely to gradually start contracting around 2020 and disappear by around 2050.

The team's findings are in line with research by other scientists.

Some, however, have suggested the hole won't heal until much later because old refrigerators and air-conditioning systems — many in the United States and Canada — are still releasing ozone-killing chemicals. Both countries curbed those chemicals in newer products.

Satellites and ground stations have been monitoring the ozone hole over the South Pole since its discovery in the 1980s.

Chlorofluorocarbon levels in the earth's atmosphere have been declining since the mid-1990s due to international efforts to reduce emissions.

I'm guessing historians will call this - "The period of time capatalism REALLY sucked!"

I have a physicist friend who did ozone studies in Antartica for a number of years. He told me years ago that the ozone hole was shrinking, but the bureaucrats who fund research will only make awards to scientists who pretend it is expanding. I heard the same thing from someone with connections to the National Science Foundation.

The grant-giving bureaucracies, government and foundations, are riddled with leftists with agendas.

By 2037 there will be new breed of scam artists, sh-t lickers, out in force pledging doomsday if this hole is permitted to disappear. "We must prevent this at ALL COSTS they will say." Wanna bet?

We should throw the Hole a going away party. Who should we invite?

From what I've read, the ozone hole thing was promoted by generous research donations from DuPont.

At that same time, DuPont's patent on freon was near or past expiration and their monopoly on air conditioning gas was about to end.

Sneaky trick...but they made it work.

Dupont actually got away pretty cheap considering.

The ball got rolling from just a couple of Dupont sponsored research projects at USC.

How is this possible? The Evil Bush Administration did not sign the Kyoto treaty. I thought that was the end of the world...

Yep. They put the 'political' in science.

If you are outside the system, even if you have your own funding source, you are branded as a 'maverick' or worse, 'crackpot' because you cannot get an 'official' grant or are not afiliated with a specific institution.

Pretty hard to buck that system outside of industry, which has better (more profitable) things to do than count the angels dancing on the head of a pin.

When and if it does we can expect to hear the same negative reasons that it was there in the first place. Enviro wackos never give up.

It is too bad that they banned R-12. It has much better cooling characteristics than R-22, and R-410. R-12 will break down into phosgene gas if burned.

I guess they are in the process of phasing out the production of R-22 by 2010 and R-410 will be the new refrigerant.

IIRC phosgene will hydrolyze into hydrochloric acid in the lungs.

NO cheers, unfortunately.

"Would that make Algore Dupont's bitch?"

Beins you said that so wistfully... It's the most hysterically funny line I've read on FR in over a year!!!

I nominate Reply #10 as FreeRepublic's funniest response of 2006!!!

Report: Ozone Hole May Disappear by 2050 (Algore the last to know...)

Now according to alGore we are all gone in 2010!??!
On Rush's website there is a count down as when we are cooked said by the kook-ville, alGore........:

Algore: We Have Ten Years Left Before Earth Cooks
January 27, 2006

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Try this one from yesterday's stack. I don't know if you people know this or not, but Al Gore has been out at the Sundance Film Festival out there in Park City, Utah. This is one of Robert Redford's big do's, and apparently Al Gore is working on a movie that -- what is the name of this movie? Oh, that's right, "An Inconvenient Truth," and the movie will document his efforts to raise alarm on the effects of global warming, and so he brought Tipper and the kids out there.

He's attending parties and posing for pictures with his fans. He's enjoying macaroni and cheese at the Discovery Channel's soirée. He's palling around with Laurie David of Curb Your Enthusiasm, who is the husband of Larry David, who drives the Prius and then flies the GV. Larry David says, "You know, Al is a funny guy, but he's also a very serious guy who believes humans may have only 10 years left to save the planet from turning into a total frying pan."
Now, the last time I heard some liberal talk about "ten years" it was 1988, Ted Danson. We had ten years to save the oceans; we were all going to pay the consequences, which would result in our death. Now Al Gore says we've got ten years. Ten years left to save the planet from a scorching. Okay, we're going to start counting. This is January 27th, 2006. We will begin the count, ladies and gentlemen. This is just... You have to love these people -- from afar, and from a purely observational point of view.
