U.S. Senate candidate Bob Keenan (R-MT) proposes end to ‘birth tax’
The Helena Independent Record ^ | May 19, 2006 | Jim Gransberry

Republican senatorial candidate Bob Keenan said Thursday there should be an end to the “birth tax’’ and accused Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., of increasing taxes on college students and their parents.

Keenan, on a road-trip campaign around Montana in an RV, said all the talk about ending the death tax is really meaningless when compared to the “birth tax,’’ the name he has given to the national debt that now stands at more than $8 trillion dollars.

Keenan said every child born now inherits its individual birth tax of $30,000 — his or her portion of the national debt.

I don't think Burns has been one of those RINOs we've been complaining about. I don't think we need to throw out all Republican Senators in the primaries, just the RINOs.

Keenan is in favor of the upcoming passports and against the fence. I'll stick with Burnsie!

I think that Bob Keenan would make a great Senator. He deserves conservative support.

Have you seen that in print? If so, it's unfortunate.

Email from the source. I was surprised, to say the least.

Keenan said every child born now inherits its individual birth tax of $30,000 — his or her portion of the national debt.

Mr. Keenan is very mistaken. I am liable ONLY for debts incurred by ME. I do NOT have ANY portion of the national debt for which I will be liable, nor do my children.

This incorrectly supposed portion of the national debt was built up without my consent and in spite of my protestations of it.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY including the central government, incurs debt, especially debt incurred against my wishes, and then tries to say I and my children are responsible for it.

The hell we are.

The central government will just have to go to the illegals ask for their money.

I admit, I'm surprised. But Conrad Burns is just going to lose in November.

Since a college education these days means little else than four years of partying interspersed by state funded indoctrination in the tenets of socialism, college students and their parents ought to have their taxes raised.

There are plenty of vocational and technical colleges which educate without resorting to such things. Hopefully you would exempt them.

Incidentally, Keenan has homeschooled his children during a portion of their childhood.

Would you vote for him, knowing he is for the passports and against sealing the southern border? Those passports will cut into our business with Canada and leaving the border open will guarantee a flow of cheap illegal labor into Montana. Both things take the bread right out of the mouths of Montanans.

Where does Conrad Burns stand on border security issues?

I am always wary of people who focus on the national debt. The issue is spending. Had we been taxed to support all of the spending we might not have any debt, but the country would be vastly poorer i.e. the kids would inherit a less prosperous country.

It's the spending that matters.

Here's Burn's record on some recent votes. He is for the Dorgan bill that would minimize the negative impact of the passport provisions and for a fence on the southern border.

Here is a collection of Bob Keenan Positions on Immigration:

This is on his website:

We are a nation of immigrants. But we have always had immigration laws. These laws should be enforced, and if they are unenforceable, we need to change them. Our biggest problem is with Mexico. We need to work with such countries so there are more opportunities there, and less desperation. Let’s treat the problem, not the symptoms. Enforce the existing laws. Increase quotas on H-1B and H-2B work visas. Better pre-employment documentation. Resources and training for local law enforcement.

Said to the Bigfork Eagle 4/5/06:

"We need a solution to illegal immigration. I'm all for legal immigration, and I'm all about the American dream, but illegal immigration is not something we should compromise on. American employers should sponsor the citizenship process for people who want to become Americans. The current immigration legislation is a flawed solution that will backfire through litigation."

Said to the Billings Gazette 5/16/06:

"The National Guard has historically always served as homeland security, and I couldn't agree with that more."

Also, I searched for a half an hour for a Keenan position on the fence and the Dorgan Amendment, and I found nothing. Can I see this email?

I dont like the idea of increasing quotas or helping Mexico crate oppurtunities. But, I like his saying we should enforce the law or change it. He seems fairly straight on the issue.

It's not about Burns voting record, which is fine, it's about his electability. He's been linked to the Abramoff stuff and he's currently trailing both of his potential D opponents by small margins. We might be facing a situation here like we did in NH in 2002 where an incumbent was going to have a much tougher time then a new face.

It's a tough decision. Is he guilty or not? If he is innocent, is incumbency worth more then scandal?

I just hope we keep the seat somehow.
