I suspect this has more to do with him being a married governor than with him being a pervert. Part of his image and his electoral appeal in New Jersey had to do with him being an Italian, Catholic family man. There are a lot of Italians and Catholics in the state. The gay life-style doesn't appeal to a majority of either. So he felt he had to skulk around.

I think it was the same with George Michael - his whole persona was that of the virile (hetero) he-man. I don't think being exposed as gay helped his album sales. It's for the same reason that guys like Tom Cruise, who may or may not be gay, aggressively quash rumors of homosexuality - it's vital for their job security.
