In Duke Case, A Rogues' Gallery
National Journal ^ | May 22, 2006 | Stuart Taylor, Jr.

Posted on 05/23/2006 11:11:33 AM PDT by zaxxon

My rogues' gallery does not (in all probability) include any Duke University lacrosse player. That's because the available evidence leaves me about 85 percent confident that the three members who have been indicted on rape charges are innocent and that the accusation is a lie. (Some evidence was in my April 29 column; some is below.)

Academics and journalists have joined in smearing presumptively innocent young men as racist, sexist brutes.

The gallery does include more than 90 members of the Duke faculty who have prejudged the case, with some exuding the anti-white racism and disdain for student-athletes that pollutes many college faculties.

The gallery also includes former Princeton University President William Bowen and civil-rights lawyer Julius Chambers. They went out of their way to slime the lacrosse players in a report on the Duke administration's handling of the rape scandal -- a report that is a parody of race-obsessed political correctness.

Many members of the national media have published grossly one-sided accounts of the case while stereotyping the lacrosse players as spoiled, brutish louts and glossing over the accuser's huge credibility problems.

You can say anything you want, these days, about white males in America and remain unscathed.

What would've happened if the lacrosse players were all black, and the stripper was white?

Would faculty members then excoriate the guys on the team?

Or would they say that the players did it because they had been oppressed for years?

God, what bull durham.

>>But when a petty-tyrant prosecutor has perverted and prolonged the legal process without disclosing his supposed evidence, and when academics and journalists have joined in smearing presumptively innocent young men as racist, sexist brutes -- in the face of much contrary evidence -- it's not too early to offer tentative judgments. <<

Stuart Taylor hits a home run!

I'll start with Houston Baker, a Duke professor of English and of African and African-American studies.

Prof. Baker will apparently be Vandy's problem now, as he was just hired for their African-American studies department.

Does the name Nancy Grace come to mind?

The article ends with this:

"Something is rotten at Duke, as at many universities. I don't think it has much to do with lacrosse. "

After the Michael Jackson travesty, she was one of the few voices of outrage on television.

But, she has blown all of that credibility these days.

She comes across as shrill and unmotivated by evidence - only her "outrage" and personal anger. Why she is angry, I do not know.

This looks like a useful target list of those from whom apologies should be demanded, when this farce plays out and these guys are exonerated.

Excellent point.

As to her anger- I recall (vaguely) that years ago her fiance was murdered. I'm sure someone else here has the details- but that seems to be her "motivation"...

Given time and money, the truth will out. Unfortunately, the race hustlers within Duke and elsewhere will pay no price for their "lynch mob" mentality. I have'nt followed this story, because it is so canned in its presentation; that and the fact that the magnetic strip on the race card wore off long ago. Good to see that the WAPO and NYT are still at the ramparts fighting the good cause. God help any white, male, Christian that happens to find himself in their crosshairs.

I'm sorry to hear that about her fiance, but from her screeds recently, you'd think a lacrosse player killed him.

The whole thing is pretty scary. You see the damage a politically motivated prosecutor can do. This kind of corrupt power is a danger to our society. But meanwhile the so-called advocates for civil liberties turn a blind eye to this abuse. To them the only real evil is the Bush-Cheney administration which they think is curbing our freedoms because they choose to fight terrorism. What a backwards society we live in.

This is the perfect storm of politicians need for coverage and the medias need for ratings. It is so predictable that it is boring - hence my lack of attention. Durham is a black city, the prosecutor is in election mode so lynching some white boys sells, and the the WAPO/NYT/and every TV media are in ratings sweeps. As you might have noticed MSM is losing advertising dollars every quarter. They don't mind a lynching as long as it pays.

Said it before, will say it again. This is nothing more than a politician seizing on an opportunity to get the vote of a race of people.

Good riddance. Duke could replace the entire English department faculty with ESL instructors and it would be a vast improvement.

Last night on Hannity & Colmes they were going over the highlights (or lowlights, as it were) of 1,300 pages of discovery documents the prosecutor turned over to the defense yesterday. It's even worse than we thought. The victim gave at least four differnt stories, in two of which she denied being raped. The drivers for the woman stated that in the weekend preceeding the incident they had driven her to local hotels six times for short visits. (ie. she's a hooker). In addition, there is nothing in the medical records to indicate this woman was raped. Further, she stated that her fellow "dancer" was in the bathroom with her when she was attacked. When confronted with this statement, the fellow "dancer" stated, "That's a crock". And lastly, there were no toxicology reports turned over. This means either no toxicology tests were performed or the prosecurtor is lying when he said he turned over "everything he had." It staggers the imagination that a hospital would examine and treat an inebriated person without doing a blood test to check toxicology.

Nancy Grace is a total whackjob, like an accident waiting to happen. I really feel she should be locked up and observed for a year or two as the lady is totally nutzoid! Why is she even allowed to be on television spewing her filthy trash towards these young men is beyond me, but were one of the guys charged with this crime, when I was released from the charges, I'd be owning whatever house and car Nancy Grace had, then I'd burn it all to the ground. She has defamed these boys big time, and she deserves to be called on it to the tune of many, many millions of dollars.

I used to think that a toxicology report was standard in rape cases, especially since "date rape drugs" might be involved and an intoxicated person cannot give consent if the "it was consensual" defense is raised.
