SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Moody's Investors Service late Tuesday downgraded Tribune Co.'s (TRB) senior unsecured long-term debt ratings to Baa1. The outlook is negative. The agency said the downgrade results from the company's ongoing share repurchase activity, increased debt balances, and weaker-than-expected operating performance. Moody's said the negative outlook recognizes ongoing event and execution risks facing the Chicago-based media company and the media sector in general.

I'm so old I can remember when the Chicago Tribune was a great newspaper. I'm sure Col. McCormack is spinning in his grave.

San Francisco should take a lesson from Las Vegas. When you have some aging dinosaur which is no longer producing up to the level of the competition, you don't hire a new PR team. You just implode the building and put something of higher and better use there.

Newspapers need to go all-out online. Imagine the money they'd save from printing costs, overhead, staff, carriers, etc.
