Twenty-one congressional leaders have called for an independent investigation into reports that officials from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection were providing information to the Mexican government about civilian patrol groups.
The lawmakers are asking the Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan investigative arm of Congress, to look into the relationship between Homeland Security and the Mexican Foreign Consulate.
In a letter sent Monday to David M. Walker, comptroller general of the United States, the congressional leaders expressed concern that the Mexican Foreign Ministry is unduly influencing the federal law enforcement agency.
"Additionally, with reports that our Border Patrol officials are identifying Minutemen locations and compromising their security by communicating these with the Mexican Foreign Ministry officials, we would also like you to identify the extent of the relationship between the Department of Homeland Security and the Mexican Foreign Ministry," the letter stated.

I'm glad to hear of this.
I've been hoping this would happen. Time to get to the bottom of it.
TJ Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, which represents more than 10,000 Border Patrol agents, said agents have been complaining for years about the Mexican consulate's influence over the department.
Bonner said an independent investigation is a necessary step in exposing the "too close for comfort relationship" between Mexico and Homeland Security.
"We're very pleased that an independent investigation is being called for," Bonner said. "It's important to note that this is just the first step. No. 1, I hope the truth comes out of the report. No. 2, I hope the report is acted upon. The question is: Will changes occur after they do that? Or will the DHS continue to do what they've always done?"
I want them to get to the bottom of this also. If true, severe penalties need to be assessed against the guilty. Too many of our Government employees still don't know who they work for.
When this first came out I took the position that our government should not be doing this but I could understand one reason they would.
That being the safety of the minutemen. Telling the Mexican government where our citizens are located is a way to insure they will actually keep their criminals away from our citizens and thus avoiding a serious incident. Something along the lines of a group of killed minutemen would blow the tinderbox that is this issue today.
I am not saying that makes it right, I am just saying I understand the mentality behind that action.
If this turns out to have really been happening then our Government has admitted that cooperation with the Mexican government CAN work and that the flow CAN be stopped save a trickle here and there ( no way we can be perfect).
I look forward to seeing how this plays out.
I think some work for the highest bidder..most of those are called Congresssmen...
One other thing any investigation needs to consider is severe sanctions against any mangers who retaliate or threaten to retaliate against employees who tell the truth under oath.
I would be more surprised if it was actual patrol officers tipping off the Mexicans but the BP brass and State department probably does on a regular basis.
Nice try.
The real reason is that the border patrol is under orders to NOT make the Minutemen look effective. They've done it before.
See, if it were shown that civillian patrols resulted in a lot more illegal alien aprehnsions, this would go against the official fed policy.
It's politics.
Actually, if I was a BP officer I would be "tipping" the Mexicans that the Minutemen were here-there-and-everywhere.
I do not disagree and I would offer avoiding an international incident is a part of politics. That being said our two examples are not all that far apart, its just one looks better than the other while both have their purpose.
I really do not want to see a group of minutemen killed. Nor do I want to see what happens in this country if that does happen.
Did Vincente Foxs's subscription to the LA and NY Times expire?
We all do not want an international incident, but if it does happen, we want to know.
Like, for instance, if the Mexican army went across the border. Oh, wait...
