Rural (TX) highways get boost to 80 mph (Armadillos and feral hogs hit hardest)

AUSTIN – Yeehaw! Texans who brag they do things bigger and better are about to go faster too.

State transportation officials on Thursday boosted speed limits on two stretches of rural highway from 75 mph to 80, leaving wandering armadillos and feral hogs a split-second less time to avoid becoming roadkill.

It will be the highest posted speed limit in the country. New speed signs should be up in the next few days.

And while state officials say the roads can accommodate it, safety and energy conservation advocates warn it will cost lives and hit drivers in the wallet at a time of spiking fuel prices.

You haven't seen road kill until you drive in Australia. Roads slick with toad squash. And those big red 'roos are deadly.

I had a Yamaha 650 turbo back when speedometers were legally limited to 80 mph. I hit a stretch about three miles long and decided to see what it would do. I pegged out at 80 in second, the turbo kicked in, upshifted all the way to 6th and was still accelerating when I hit the end of the stretch. I have no idea how fast I was going, but I know that a june bug would have really hurt. I took my old Corvette to 125 once, and it was nowhere near top speed, have no idea what top speed is. I would assume that Cobra would handle 145 with no problem, the '67 which was heavier, was, I believe, supposed to hit 165 with the 427 in it. That's a lot of engine for something that light.

LOL! That reminds me of the time I was traveling I 40, between Tucumcary and Albuquerque on solid ice. I was creeping along at about 40 mph, with my foot as gentle on the accelerator as I possibly could, when I noticed the speedometer read 80 mph, that's how fast the wheels were spinning. If I had hit a dry spot about then, I wouldn't be here typing this.

DPS in Georgetown during the 1970's had a gold unmarked 440 six pack Coronet that was legendary. BTW, found this picture at Strange Cosmos:

'93 RX-7 twin turbo.

OK, quick, how do I post and image. Looked in the tutorials and none of them said how to post to an http. At least I could not decipher it.

Top speed 160. Only got it up to 155 between Barstow and Laughlin. Passenger weighed over 250, maybe that was a problem.

I hope you folks can afford what those speeds will do to your mileage!

open bracket then img src="fullurlimagenamehere" close bracket. Use preview to check the link. Also, a lot of domains forbid hotlinking.

There are no armadillos on the 89 miles of I-20 between Monahans and Jeff Davis Co.

Nothing else on that road either. Except a few 8 point jackalopes standing 6 feet high.

But they just got lost on their way to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Jackalope capital of the world.

When I was a kid, I never saw a jackalope with horns. They gave Oklahoma a wide berth, because of the ferocity of our horny toads.

Those toads was really horny, and they scared the horns right off those jackalopes, they did. And we shot the hornless jackalopes, mistaking them for oversized jack rabbits. So they stayed away from the Okie border religiously.

The horny toads would shoot blood at you from their eyes, so we left them alone, too. Nothing worse than a horny toad with blood in his eyes.

We have a '66 Replica with a 427 SO and 3.55 gears and it won't go over 135 due to the top loader and hydraulic lifters:

So we build this for Open Road Racing:

502 Hp 502, Richmond 6 speed, 2.50 gears. I don't know what the ultimate top speed is, but it will cruise for an hour at 165 mph.

LBJ park was out 71 past the Pedernales. It had a place you could slide down an incline of rocks into a natural and swirling pool.

Close. Use the "<" symbol to open the command instead of the bracket, and the ">" symbol to close and try it again.

As long as it's Diet Coke. No open containers of drinking alcohol in the vehicle in Texas.

The 3.55 rear is unnecessarily low for a torquey 427 and you were probably getting valve float with hydraulic lifters. The Pontiac is cool in a different way. She looks like a sleeper, but the fun part is blowing the doors off a pimped 1982 Camaro.

When I was a kid, my brother and I took an old 1961 Ford Falcon and put some serious bhp under the hood with a 4 speed. The exterior cosmetics were left unchanged. Boy did we surprise some of the MoPar guys!

I am 70 years old and have been in Texas since I was four... When did Texas have no speed limits?

'93 RX-7 R. An honest 155, tops 160. And all you hear is the wind.
