Rural (TX) highways get boost to 80 mph (Armadillos and feral hogs hit hardest)

AUSTIN – Yeehaw! Texans who brag they do things bigger and better are about to go faster too.

State transportation officials on Thursday boosted speed limits on two stretches of rural highway from 75 mph to 80, leaving wandering armadillos and feral hogs a split-second less time to avoid becoming roadkill.

It will be the highest posted speed limit in the country. New speed signs should be up in the next few days.

And while state officials say the roads can accommodate it, safety and energy conservation advocates warn it will cost lives and hit drivers in the wallet at a time of spiking fuel prices.

Once you pass Killeen heading west, you're going to have to flip, cause there ain't anything to hit.

The Beast won't like this. She thinks we should go back to the Carter era of "drive fifty-five".

the biggest problem with this - tires. alot of people drive around with inferior tires, run to over 80MPH in that heat, there are going to be alot of blowouts and high speed crashes.

Doubt it. These are not your father's tires.

Lower speed limits in cities means more congestion, and that means more gas consumption.

Bingo! Buy that man a cigar!

Many cars will do 145. Even a 1964 Shelby AC Cobra like mine.

I knew it! I just knew you were gonna post up a pic of your Cobra.

Just to make me jealous!

I do like that car! Have you ever hit top speed? Do you personally know it will do 145?

So will 95 in an 80 be less of a fine than 95 in a 70? My Sporty, Phydeaux, knows nor acknowledges no speed limits save those of physics......

I pegged the speedo at 120 and the tach was still climbing. Then I ran out of road; so to answer your question, I don't know for a fact that if she'll do 145. I assume it will.

I have a buick with a 3.8 that would do 145. Maxing out torqe in overdrive will get you going.

Doubt it. These are not your father's tires.

Especially if his Father drove a 90's Ford Explorer.

We had family friends killed on this very section of road (100 miles east of El Paso), when the tread separated on their Wilderness TA's and their explorer rolled 3 times.

And don't believe the Car and Driver BS test where they deflated the tire and said "look ma, no hands". A tread separation is a different animal. The tire stays inflated, but instead of high traction rubber you have a smooth steel surface contacting the road.

Hit the brakes and the car will snap sideways so fast it will make your head spin.

There will be additional blowouts and more than likely deaths from the higher limits, but that is the way life works. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you.

Don't know about Feral hogs, but Armadillos and possums dream of becoming part of the pavement, like country kids dream of becoming a Nashville star and inner city kids dream of playing in the NBA.

Not really. They will just have to issue hotter cars to state troopers, so they can catch up with the speeders.
