The federal government again has decided not to protect the California spotted owl under the Endangered Species Act.
After almost a year of study, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service denied a petition by environmental groups to list the owl, saying population numbers don't warrant such a shield. It was the second time in three years the wildlife service has said Endangered Species Act protection is unnecessary.
"The current population of the spotted owl is stable or increasing" in the state, said Steve Thompson, manager of the wildlife service's California and Nevada Operations office.
Cousins of the California spotted owl -- the Mexican spotted owl, found in Arizona and New Mexico, and the better known northern spotted owl -- remain under protection from the act.

spotted owl ... the other white meat!
Mmm. Spotted owl. Tastes like chicken.
Would that the leftists champion humans beings like they do inconsequential subgroups of animals. Why aren't they concerned about the killings of over a million people in Rwanda? Why aren't they concerned about the millions of people dying of malaria because DDT was banned? Why aren't they concerned about teaching responsibility and consequences for actions?
Instead, their moral duty is obviously fulfulled because they champion putting the spotted owl and the monochromed golliwoggle on the endangered list and they can spend the taxpayers' dollars with wild abandon, knowing that they are doing good.
