CHICAGO – A Chicago ordinance that would make the city one of the few in the U.S. to openly and officially oppose federal provisions to criminalize undocumented immigrants has been ratified and will go into effect immediately, reports the Spanish language daily, La Raza. The ordinance was passed unanimously by the City Council March 29. Whether or not the provision to criminalize undocumented immigrants is approved as part of broader immigration reform laws being debated at the federal level, Chicago’s local authorities and municipal employees will respect the municipal ordinance, said councilmember Ray Suarez. The ordinance, he said, will prohibit city officials from becoming immigration police. Chicago has been designated a “sanctuary” for undocumented immigrants, and joins other cities, like Portland, Denver and Austin, Texas that have adopted similar ordinances. The state of Illinois is also the only state in the U.S. that has approved a healthcare program for all children until they are 18, regardless of their immigration status, according to the report.

Chicago has a surprisingly large Hispanic population and I'm sure much of it is comprised of illegals.

Totally agree. That city should become its own state so the rest of IL won't have to deal with them.
