The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and the Minuteman Project evolved from the same origins, but have veered in different directions since their leaders first joined forces early last year.
Among the similarities, however, is their disgust for elected officials who refuse to enforce existing immigration laws.
"If our federal government is not going to respond, there's a real movement to tell Democrats and Republicans that we're not going to sit back and take it," said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
"It's not political to want border security," he added. "We must demand our elected officials uphold the law."
"I don't trust either major party," said Minuteman Project leader Jim Gilchrist, adding that President Bush has disappointed millions of Americans. "It's so obvious he has no intention to preserve the sovereignty of the U.S. or protect us from criminals."
Simcox and Gilchrist are working together and separately on the issue of immigration through their respective groups, which they formed after a monthlong, 24-hour-a-day border watch in April 2005 in Palominas, Ariz. Palominas is the town where a privately owned fence is now being built to prevent border crossers from getting into the United States.
MCDC spokeswoman Connie Hair said her group decided to break ground last Saturday because it didn't want to sit around and wait any longer for the U.S. Congress to sort out its differences on immigration reform and get serious on border security.
"It's overwhelmingly a national security issue," Hair said, calling the flow of immigrants "a human tsunami over the border."
The two Minuteman groups are made up of grandparents, children, World War II veterans, pilots, accountants, doctors, teachers, cab drivers, former military, law enforcement, and border patrol, the planners said.

There's plenty of blame to go around.

I wouldn't count on it yet. The history of American politics is that a minority party has a good idea, it gets absorbed by one of hte majority parties who are revitalized by it.
The rules about elections and ballots and such are sort of in favor of this, too, which is another reason why it gets hard.
2008 is mighty soon for that to change.
2012 perhaps the Conservative party could swallow the Republicans, if things keep going this way, though.
Nonetheless, the immigration issue is waking up a lot of non-politicals. I've gotten emails from friends and family who never consider politics all that much.
Whatever happens, it will effect the outcome of the 2008 elections.

Certainly you realize that politics is a corrupt profession populated mostly by lawyers. The corruption of both parties has reached such proportions that they must all be thrown out of office before they break the bank. Jail is not sufficient. All incumbents must be defeated and replaced by fresh faces who we will not allow to stay in office long enough to become corrupt again.

I don't care who decides to run with the "good idea" ball as long as they do it. I don't care what initial is beside their name I want this countries elected officials to uphold the rule of law. I'm sick to death of the stench coming from the bulk of our elected officials.
Bush and the Senate, (both parties), are fighting so hard to keep these millions of illegals in America that I now have the unnerving feeling that all these illegals were part of their plan to 'fix' the Social Security disaster that they have knowingly created with unprecedented government spending.

New litmus test for candidates, either party:

6. Divorceless and married to the opposite sex

Got that right.
> No formal education past 12th grade
Not sure I agree with that. College is useful to some, and they aren't *all* liberal. But I'd certainly go with no law school.
Besides, Jim Gilchrist has three degrees including an MBA. :)

I think opur situation is even worse than Gilchrist intimates.........if one understands that illegal immigration is the conditioning tactic being used to meld the USA into the N. American Union that will no doubt seek the eradication of our Constitution and legal protections we now enjoy, then it's obvious these political traitors have to be branded for what they are......is 'domestic enemies' a good start?
I can't see voting for any of the misfits in congress now. They all are beyond help and reason. Where did all of the Americans go?
I'll have to disagree with you on the lawyer part- my sister is a staunch conservative, and a partner in a law firm (patent law). I also know at least one atty co-worker of hers is very conservative as well (I've made anti-liberal t-shirts for him). My daughter is in college right now (to be a teacher) and she is very conservative.
I think returning public office to a statesman's job (with the emphasis on quality leadership not just electing the guy who runs the most ads) along with term limits seems a better answer to me.
The fact that many people "wise up" as they get older makes requirements like college & marriage issues not totally sensible IMHO.

Connie HAIR is or was a freeper.. Can't remember her handle..
This girl is a Do'er and not a hear'er only..
Hey, President Bush!
If you want to regain a tiny amount of credibility with your own party, why don't you invite these two men to the White House to a VERY public conference with yourself, Chertoff, and the appropriate department heads about the illegal alien invasion problem.
When the conference ends, award the Medal of Freedom to both men for the great service they have performed for American citizens, by reminding elected officials of their sworn duty to protect the Constitution by protecting the Country.
A disgusted citizen.
