"Contrast that to those of us who were against the Clinton NATO mess. We felt it was the wrong mission, and that we had no business being there. But once we were in it, we wanted to see the mission succeed."
That describes most of the anti-war people I've talked to and argued with.
They expect to be taken seriously with a message like that?
I don't get what you're saying here.
I may not have agreed with Clinton's NATO messes, but once we were there I was 100% behind the mission and wanted us to succeed. Most of the anti-war people I've talked to and argued with are rabidly against our succeeding in Iraq and are actually hoping for our defeat.
There's a huge world of difference between disagreeing with the mission but still wanting it to succeed and disagreeing with the mission and hoping it fails.
I can't remember where it appeared. Takoma may remember.
But some idiots in DC liked it so much that they wrote that same message on the T-shirts they were given to wear on the September 11th Freedom Walk last year...
Brilliant post.
So if I'm on an anonymous forum, how do I get included in this 10M?
I believe, what it is, is some very vocal people, that are speaking out, and for whatever reason, some people listen to them.
What I feel, and how I think, does not register with anyone, except perhaps here on FR. I will continue feeling and thinking as I do.
I still don't understand how someone supports or does not support the troops, by saying something about a war, if they are not in the limelight. How is this done by the average person that just gets up and goes about their daily life?
uh, no one here announced any such thing.
As if all the left is doing is offering constructive criticism.
If you are not going to support the troops or the war effort, it's just as well you stay below the radar. Sit it out and let the willing do the heavy lifting.
uh, I didn't say anyone did...I said that this brings to mind a quote.....
Since I have worked in the defense sector practically my whole life, how is it, that I am NOT supporting the troops? What, exactly, is this heavy lifting you speak of?

What I'm saying is that the anti-war people I've talked to were rabidly opposed to the Iraq mission but now have a "We need to finish the job before leaving and we wish the troops safety and success" attitude. They'll follow this with a "We shouldn't have gone there but gone to Iran/Saudi Arabia, etc.". I've not met anyone who is rabidly wishing for our defeat. I know those people exist...I just haven't encountered them in person.
Kerry's comment about the SUV that "it's the family's" says a lot about who runs things in his "family"-- and it ain't him.
Roosevelt was right when he made that statement and it is right today. Criticizing and opposing a president is not unpatriotic, per se, but the means by which many(most?) on the left are doing it IS unpatriotic, and unthinking.
In this case I support the troops and the mission, but I don't think it would be treasonous to disagree with a particular military mission, only that the criticism should be clothed in logic and measured, not shrill and hate-filled, as done by the left-wing Bush haters. It only takes one or two questions to know what their REAL motivation is, and that is hatred of this president. If a democrat president were waging this war on terror, you would hear scant opposition from the left, just as you heard little about Kosovo, Haiti, Somalia, etc.
Also, criticism of the mission should explicitly exclude any wish (stated or implied) that we should fail in our mission. In ANY military mission, I want ALL of the casualties on the other side and NONE on ours, no matter what I think about the advisability of going in the first place.
If a democrat president were waging this war, of course we wouldn't hear all this stuff from the left, we'd hear it from the right...
