The safety is, in my opinion, the worst part of a Kalashnikov's design. You have to remember what the country of origin for that weapon is and what the leadership's attitude is about their grunt is. Safety is not the primary issue.

Actually, safety is the primary issue. Efficiency and convenience are secondary.
Moving from safe to semi auto or to full auto and back requires and the use of two hands and is not a natural action.
You are right about the Russian attitude towards the wellbeing of their people though.
