SEVENTEEN people who face terrorism charges for allegedly plotting attacks in southern Ontario were motivated by politics and hate, not religion, Toronto's police chief said today, hoping to stem any backlash against local Muslims.
"It appears that a number of these young men were motivated by an ideology based on politics, hatred and terrorism, and not on faith," said Chief Bill Blair after meeting with local Muslim leaders to discuss their fears of repercussions.
"I am not aware of any mosques that these individuals were influenced by," he said.
His comments came after a mosque in Toronto was vandalised overnight, hours after police made public the arrests of 17 young men, described in reports as devout Muslims, for plotting attacks in and around the Canadian metropolis.
Vandals broke 28 windows at the International Muslims Organisation of Toronto, causing some 15,000 Canadian dollars ($18,125) in damage.
"It is certainly possible that this damage was motivated by hate," the police chief said.
For their part, Muslim leaders condemned acts or threats of violence, "including terrorism in all its forms".
"We are committed to the safety and security of Canada and Canadians," said Mohammed Alam of the Islamic Foundation of Toronto.
"This is not about religion or faith. Some people may have legitimate concerns and in some cases justifiable anger about the political and social situation around the world. However that should not be an excuse for any hateful extremes or violent behaviour," he said.
Hussein Patel of the Canadian Council of Muslim Theologians, who called such acts "anti-Islamic behaviour", said: "Any threat to Canada poses a threat to Muslims in Canada as well."
Their Muslim audience, however, lamented their community's tarnished image now and wondered aloud about the legitimacy of the arrests.
"The damage is already done. The public has already judged these people as terrorists," one audience member said.
"All Muslims are not terrorists, but all the terrorists have been Muslims."
I've notice that reports concentrate more on the terrorists being "Canadian citizens," rather than their being Muslims.

We know this has absolutely nothing to do with Islam. And you can take that to the bank.
I wonder how much of it is an effort to minmize concern and panic in North America. They'll deny the presence of terrorists here as long as possible.
The headline SHOULD read "Muslims Reassure Canadians", by stating loud and clear that when they encounter the violent Wahabbi strain of Islam and their practitioners that they will be identified to law enforcement and their jihadist sentiments will not be tolerated by the "Religion of Peace".
But that would require a spine, and the guts to admit that the Koran is nothing but a do-it-yourself kit for a death cult masquerading as a religion.

Actually, it is about religion, faith and a centuries old cult of death.
The sooner we all realise that and start publically acknowledging it, the quicker we can win and end this war. Its a religous war. A war of cultures, cultures seperated by centuries and religions seperated by the value of life.

Is it me or does that word order seems awkward like Catholic Americans or Portestant Americans?
Don't we say American Catholics and American Protestants because we aren't implying that religion is an ethnicity or something immutable? But perhaps being or becoming Muslim is immutable, ending only with death for apostasy.

The Canadians are nuts for letting as many Islamonuts come into their country. Look at what is happening in Europe. The US had better smarten up as well. What the hell we all thinking ??
