Scoutmaster Sentenced To 20 Years For Abusing Boys

NEW YORK -- A Boy Scout leader was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday for sexually abusing two 13-year-old members of his troop.

Ronald Occhipinti, 46, a scoutmaster for 15 years, pleaded guilty May 8 to taking sexually explicit photographs of the boys and abusing them at his home in Bayside, Queens and in a church several times between Sept. 1, 2003 and Aug. 6, 2005.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Occhipinti "abused not only his two young victims who looked up to him as a leader, a responsible adult, but exploited the trust of their parents who unknowingly placed their children in harm's way."

Occhipinti worked for a Long Island burglar alarm system company while serving as scoutmaster of Troop 183 in Great Neck.

The abuse also took place at a camp upstate. On May 19, Occhipinti pleaded guilty in Sullivan County to first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, second-degree aggravated sexual abuse and use of a child in a sexual performance.
