'I believe that the second largest illegal immigrant group in the US.... is the Irish.'

It's a good job us English made the Irish speak English a few hundred years ago or you'd now all be complaining about the damned Irish not being assimilated and speaking Gaelic everywhere! :D

My point is that, if we keep allowing this discussion to concentrate just on Mexicans, we will end up with a solution that only solves half of the problem. So, then I guess we will have to put up with more outrage and hand-wringing.

Right, there is Guyana (former British Guiana) and Suriname (former Dutch Guiana)...French Guiana is not independent but an "overseas department" of France.

In Paraguay, Guarani is an official language alongside Spanish, and may be more widely spoken than Spanish.

What I fret about are the sex slave and indentured servant smuggling operations I see. We have a bunch of people here who have fled indochinese communists, for instance.

Yes, but the second generation ALWAYS SPEAKS ENGLISH. Go to Newark, Kearny, or Harrison in New Jersey, and you will see that the CHILDREN of the Brazilian immigrants prefer English to Portuguese. Same was true of the Colombians I lived among in Miami.

The whole language issue is a tempest in a teapot. My great grandmother lived in this country for fourty years without learning English. I can't think of ANY group in this country where the second generation prefers their parents language to English.

America is a Cyborg. We WILL assimilate your children.
