Buchanan(Tancredo) PAC targets Cannon in radio ads

If you can define yourself in politics by the kind of enemies you make, Rep. Chris Cannon is moving up in the world.

Cannon, R-Utah, is now receiving the significant monetary attention of Team America, an anti-illegal immigration political action committee started by fellow GOP House member Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., and now run by Bay Buchanan, the celebrated sister of longtime conservative candidate/columnist Pat Buchanan.

Bay Buchanan, who appears regularly on national TV news and political opinion programs, put it bluntly in a telephone interview Tuesday: "We want to defeat Chris Cannon."

Knocking out "President Bush's point man in the House on amnesty and guest worker programs for the United States . . . will show that we intend to hold (other congressmen) accountable," Buchanan said. "The best way to do that is to defeat Cannon — that will put the whole (U.S.) House on notice."

Pointing to detailed Cannon votes on its Web site — www.teamamericapac.org — Buchanan said the group's ads tell "the truth" about Cannon's support for an illegal immigrant amnesty and guest worker program.

Not so, says Nathan Rathbun, Cannon's campaign manager. "Rather than relying on attacks from out-of-state special interests, we would suggest talking about Congressman Cannon's actual record.

"If you look at that record, you will see that it is not what those ads portray it to be. The ads are not true. Chris has always said he is against illegal immigration and for legal immigration. To suggest that Chris is somehow a Johnny-come-lately to enforcement is just plain wrong. For example, Cannon has voted five times since 1999 to authorize the use of military personnel on the border.

"We will hold that record up against a laughter-filled radio ad (by Team America) any day of the week," Rathbun said

Team America's accusations are so far off of the truth "we don't even know how to respond," Rathbun said. But Cannon's campaign apparently will try to do so. KSL Radio officials say Cannon is expanding his radio buy this week — he had a new ad running specifically saying he's tough on illegal immigrants — while Team America is spending $15,000 on anti-Cannon spots.

Why target Cannon rather than other GOP House members with similar voting records on illegal immigration?

"Chris Cannon is first up to bat," Buchanan said. "His primary just happens to come before some others. But beyond that, (Cannon) is not telling his constituents the truth. He's hiding from his real record" in voting on illegal immigration issues.

But Cannon would be in Team America's gun sights even if his primary were later in the year, she added.

Cannon "is a great opportunity for us. If we can defeat a sitting congressman in his own primary, it will send a shock wave through the whole House. Put all (so-called pro amnesty congressmen) on alert."

Buchanan showed up in Utah at the May 13 state GOP convention to speak for Merrill Cook, a former GOP 2nd Congressional District House member who was knocked out of the 3rd District race at the convention.

Team America is not giving any money to Republican John Jacob, who faces Cannon in the June 27 primary. "We are a small PAC," Buchanan said. "But we will run radio ads through next week until the primary."

The Team America PAC collects money from all over the country. But in late 2005, a Spanish Fork couple, Kevin and Jenny Baadsgaard, loaned the PAC nearly $10,000, its largest single contribution, Federal Election Commission reports show.

Buchanan said those specific funds went for a DVD production and are not directly going into paying for the two anti-Cannon radio ads now on local Utah stations.

Kevin Baadsgaard declined comment Tuesday on why his family supports Team America. However, the Baadsgaards donated several thousand dollars in 2004 to Matt Throckmorton, a former Utah GOP House member who tried, unsuccessfully, to unseat Cannon that year. Throckmorton's main campaign issue was illegal immigration.

So far, the Baadsgaards have not contributed to Jacob.

The district is heavily Republican, and the primary winner is an odds-on favorite to win the seat in November. If Cannon survives the June 27 primary, Team America will likely back away. "We are opposing pro-amnesty Republicans in their primaries, opposing Democrats in the final election," Buchanan said.

She doesn't expect Team America to be in Utah contesting Cannon's election in the November final campaign. "But with (Cannon), well . . . we'd still probably make that decision later," she said.

You're counting on a large turnout of the stupid vote in an off-year primary election.

JMO, Mr. Eccles, you seem to have much personal experience in the stupid vote.

Why do I think this endorsement is more about collecting money than distributing it?

But why is Cannon now running away from his past record...the point man for Bush's immigration policy?

I'm going to take a person's opinion(JCeccles) on the internet as the "truth".

I doubt that Chris Cannon is running away from his record, but is running on his record of being conservative on taxes, the 2nd amendment, abortion, and a whole other issues that concer real conservatives, not one issue zealots like you and Eccles.

About Cannon's ads. I haven't heard lies this brazen bellow from the political machinery of a politician since Bill Clinton had his magnificent Liar's Pandemonium humming, droning, popping, squeaking, and screaching like the apocalypse itself during the Monica Lewinsky caper.

I can just see and hear Bill Clinton grinning as he hears one of Cannon's ads: "Man, I could take lessons from that guy!"

Because Tancredo ran away from his own proposal when Pence took it up.

When it was offered by Tancredo the bomb thrower, that was all right. But when Pence took it up, it suddenly looked as if it might actually pass--and that would leave Tancredo without an issue to run on and raise money on.

Well, Cannon has a 100% rating from ACU in 2005 and in 2004. Lifetime: 97%. The ADA rated him a 0% in 2000-2002 and 2004-2005. In 2003, he got 5%.

I am not eager to throw a guy like that overboard for an unknown.

Hot issues change Mr. Dane.
And we will see if the Bush/Cannon/Senate immigration approach is what rural america wants. Why isn't he running the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform"
ads he has supported until he was forced into the runoff?

I'll tell you why. He's seen the polls. They are telling him to dump the Bush/Senate/His past Record on immigration reform to save his job.

Don't cha love a man of principle?

I think that Tancredo enjoyed being a cult Congressman, the favorite of a small amount of people. When he's faced with the possibility of getting something done, I don't think he wants to have anything to do with it.

It is interesting, isn't it?

For all the Big talk by the open borders lobby/GOP sycophants about how pro-enforcement people are fringers...Cannon is pretending to be one of us to win the primary.

So if manages to keep his seat, is this a victory for open borders? No, because he isn't running on open borders. He's running on the House Plan.

If you go to Jacobs' website, his positions are fuzzy and ill-defined. It resembles Kinky Friedman's, who is running for governor here in Texas.

Jacobs is hoping to slip in as the "un-Cannon." Cannon has a sterling record, and is being endorsed by the NRA.

Jacobs is endorsed by Bay Buchanan.

Do the math.

That's amazing for a candidate who is running in a quixotic quest against an incumbent in a primary. Usually these guys are declarative. They take risky stands and try to rally the base. I wonder what this guy's beliefs really are that make him so evasive?

Look at this,

Republican Congressional candidate John Jacob is in the hot seat. Jacob supports cracking down on illegal immigration, but now he's accused of hiring undocumented workers. Critics are calling Jacob a hypocrite. But Jacob, who is running against incumbent Chris Cannon, insists he did nothing wrong. The controversy centers around a Chilean couple, whom Jacob admits he helped several years ago, at the request of his church bishop. He says, the man and his wife were here on student visas and the man is now close to getting his citizenship. Jacob says, he paid the man's wife for housework because she didn't want to take advantage of his kindness...

Linda Chavez does the same thing and it is "off with her head", by the immigration zealots.

No wonder Tancredo supports Jacob. They are blood brothers when it comes to hiring illegals.

What is your problem with Tancredo? You have a problem with someone speaking the truth about immigration?

He's all grift, and no deeds.

You have a problem with someone speaking the truth about immigration?

Let me know when he starts to do so, OK? He punked out when his OWN EFFING BILL GOT PROPOSED BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN HIMSELF!

Hi Dane.

Do you know any 'undocumented aliens' personally?

Ask John Jacob, he did exactly what Linda Chavez did, but I don't see you all calling for his head ala like you did with Linda Chavez.

They seem to forget to ask why Cannon, an entrenched incumbent was forced into a runoff to begin with. I mean how many incumbents are forced into runoffs by unknowns?

One Reason: Immigration

Cannon also had a runoff in 04 and won it handily with 60% of the vote.

Oh I forgot you guys disregard electoral history, nevermind.
