I think it's always a good idea to have a vaccine available. If people have more sex (which I seriously doubt is going to happen) because of the vaccine, then so be it.
HPV strains 16 and 18 are the ones that cause the most cases of cervical cancer, thus it makes sense to vaccinate against them. It's just like haemophilus influenza Type B vaccince. Hib used to be #1 cause of neonatal meningitis. Countless babies died from it. Now it's extremely rare. Why? Because all kids are vaccinated against it (since 1992). The vaccince does not protect you from all strains of haemophilus influenza, only type B! But this was good enough since type B was the culprit here.
See my post above. Even a chaste, virgin women is at risk for getting infected with HPV if her husband has it. He may have no symptoms and pass it to his virgin bride who may also have no symptoms. Then, years later, she gets the disease. How many guys are actually honest about their sexual past?
Would you have casual intercourse more carelessly?
You know, a woman doesn't need to be promiscuous to get HPV. She only has to have sex with a man who is or used to be (before he was married or forgiven perhaps) and contracted the virus in that way.
Maybe it won't happen to your wife or daughters, though.
Are you kidding me? Women who weren't deterred from unprotected casual sex by the risk of herpes or HIV were terrified of HPV, and now will be slingin' a-- all over the street because of this vaccine? Their only deterrent was a usually symptomless bug that might increase their odds of cancer decades from now? Man, I'd love a peek into your world, where the local corner skank bases her Saturday night plans on a perusal of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Just look at what happened to the rate of HIV infection after the advent of the "cocktail" treatments allowed victims to live longer and almost normal lives. It started going up again.
I think you're confusing correlation and causation. There is a small population of freaks who actively seek unprotected sex with HIV+ partners, but most of the up-tick is because the risky people are living longer, not because living people are getting more risky. And that ignores other factors like the rise of club drugs that impair judgment and make people more likely to throw caution - and clothing -- to the winds.
