Citizens group confronts sheriff on immigrants

'Copwatch' calls for sheriff to release immigrants from jail Friday, June 16, 2006 Members of a citizens group known as Copwatch protested outside Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office Friday morning. They held signs asking Arpaio to release illegal immigrants that his deputies and volunteer posse members have arrested. The arrests came under a state law making it illegal to conspire to smuggle humans into Arizona, or to conspire to be smuggled. Arpaio came down from his 19th floor office in the Wells Fargo Building to let the members of Copwatch present their complaints in person. They told Arpaio that he and County Attorney Andrew Thomas are misintepreting the law, which they claim was intended to apply only to coyotes, or human smugglers. Arpaio responded that with over two dozen immigrants already having pleaded guilty, the justice system has apparently agreed that the law is constitutional.

Andy is in trouble too, he is funneling all kinds of work to the lawfirm he used to work for, but did he actually do any work for them? No one knows, he won't release his billings during the time he was there.

You are correct in your assumptions. You definitely don't want to piss the guy off.

The truth is, we could get rid of this guy in a heartbeat, if only the media would cooperate and tell the truth about him. They won't because they're afraid of him.

When he's gone (soon, hopefully), we'll be hearing all about his greed and corruption. Until then, though, he's managed to fool a whole lot of people, including here.

He had his men arrest an actor who was a spokesman for a campaign he was against. They arrested him for impersonating an officer.

On Halloween.

He was wearing a sheriffs style shirt, pink boxers and thongs. He was in a resturant eating lunch.

Another lawsuit for Joe, more money out of Maricopa County citizens pockets.

Thanks, guys! I've been holding down the fort all alone tonight, just waiting for the reinforcements to show up!

Are you implying Michael Chertoff doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground when it comes to the department he runs? Please say it isn't so!

So criminals have their own advocacy group now?

Yup, for some time now.

The main one is called the ACLU.

Yeah, plus he screwed over the republicans here and backed Janet. Then there are all the guys that died in restraint chairs that mysteriously had evidence missing. The kid in jail that his undercover guy threatened with violence and set him up with a phoney assination plot. Which of course ended up with Arpaio losing the lawsuit for millions.

And on and on.

Just yesterday, tent city guards were denying inmates (nearly all of them awaiting trial, not proven guilty) water. 112 degrees in the shade and they weren't allowing them water...

Everyone that I know and several freepers who read up on Arpaio change their minds, including several that I thought would never change their minds.

The truth will come out, once he is out of the power he uses to protect himself.

Read about the Saville kid that he set up.

That's the one I remember. If that wasn't entrapment then nothing is.

Can somebody tell me how that ended?

No problem, there are dozens of articles detailing his abuses and the lawsuits he has lost, costing us millions.

It's great that you're not letting the Sheriff Joe Dog and Pony Show go unchallenged. It totally amazes me that FReepers could jump on the Sheriff Joe bandwagon without checking him out!

Saville sued, and won, I believe it was about 10 million.

The "Joe Arizona" and Dan Saban cases are coming up soon, he will lose those ones too.

Joe for homeland security?

Dear God.

Joe wanted to set up barricades at entry points into the county and fingerprint all drivers coming in.

Joe would have made a great Stasi chief.

Oh, here's another one - remember all those detectives that were investigating "massage parlors"? They waited until AFTER they had sex with the prostitutes to arrest them!

So the citizens of Maricopa County were paying the detectives in the Sheriff's department to have sex on the job. Unbelievable.

Of course, the entire "sting" was thrown out and all cases were dismissed because it was improperly done. And The Joke still doesn't acknowledge that he did anything wrong.

The whole point of the operation was to garner publicity for The Joke - but it blew up in his face and instead everyone around here was laughing at him...again!

You mean, WE will lose those. Unfortunately, all of the judgments are paid for by us, the citizens of Maricopa County, the ones The Joke purports to care about.

I don't know the man, but he at least seems to be doing something about illegal immigration. Chertoff is clearly not qualified to run Homeland Security. The very fact he was selected by the compassionate, pro-illegal Bush team makes him highly suspect. Would Joe do better, perhaps not, but I like his idea of rounding up illegals.

The jury decided that officers from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department had entrapped Saville and found him not guilty. The civil suit is going to add several million more to the penalties Maricopa County taxpayers have had to shell out because of Sheriff Joe.
