See, those I'd buy. It's hard to find good flannel footie pajamas when you're five-ten and have size 10 feet.

South 40 said,
"So how do they owe their fame to the Robinsons?"

That's why I said "in large part." Not "totally," not "solely," etc.

At the very least, the Robinsons have helped by giving us all a central clearing house and clipping service for news and events.

How many others go to FR the second they hear an important news alert or some controversy on one of these shows - or turn the radio when we read that something is going on?

I hate to be the fly in the punchbowl, but such a gathering will never get off the ground these days. Only the guarantee of Hillary riding naked on a horse down a nearby street will motivate the formation and success of an ambitious freep no matter where it's held.

Take it from me and others who've organized big freeps like this before.

For one example, well-known conservative speakers charge 50 grand and-up plus expenses (air, food/hotel) for a speaking engagement. Anybody got the front money for this, plus hotel deposit (thousands of dollars), or the time, know-how and wherewithal to organize it in the first place?

I think a one-week virtual celebration on the forum would be the ticket, and would be a lot of fun at no cost to anyone. As an added benefit, thousands of lurkers across the country can also enjoy the jubilant on-line party resulting in great advertising for FR and perhaps lots of new members.

I can envision a lot of reminiscing on-line that anniversary week, the postings of true (and exaggerated, LOL) anecdotes, pics posted of ancient freeps and freepers and all that.......um, um, good

Our annual FreeRepublic picnic/tailgate is scheduled for 9-9-06.

I haven't talked to Jim Robinson, but maybe we could rename it FreeRepublic Tenth Anniversary and Annual FReeper Picnic. I wonder if we could get anyone to come to Fresno?

In November, the best date would be the Thanksgiving Weekend. San Diego would be great since there are so many activities for families. This might encourage FReepers with families to attend.

If something is planned for the Ten Year Anniversary, jkphoto and I will try to be there. San Diego would be nice, but Texas is more central.

I was reading this thread and having similar thoughts.

Their have been many national events all across the country, but none in California.

I believe because Fresno is the Base Camp of Free Republic that a FR 10th anniversary event should be in Fresno. Or at the very least in California.

Hooking it up with the Picnic is a good idea.

But I also like the idea of San Diego, but I am partial to the North Coast so I think Monterey would be an excellent spot.

Plus we could have a BBQ at the Leggett Valley/Santa Cruz/Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur/Fresno-Central Valley Chapters of Free Republic's club house in the foothills overlooking the Monterey Bay for those who would like to arrive a day or so early.

Now, this sounds like an excellent idea! The last time we were invited to a BBQ at the "club house" we couldn't make it.

Yes, Texas is more central for everyone in this country.

But I still like the idea of having it in California.

I have been to dozens of nationwide events. Several in DC (The Balls and a few others), one in South Carolina (That was a blast!), several in Texas (The one in Dallas was interesting) , one in Vegas (quite the epiphaninatical experience for me), one out of Miami (The first FR Cruize...I stubbed my toe and knee on that one) and many small ones here in California.

If people fly, it isn't that much more to fly to California than it is to other places in the country. Plus California is just a short drive from Texas, I've made that trip about 4 or five times!

If a working guy like me can do all of that, heck we should be able to get all 267,567 members of Free Republic to Monterey!

Well, what the heck. California is Beautiful and everyone here at FR needs a reason to come here!

I would like to see Free Republic EXPAND. Television, magazine, a city... I think we should buy a city, just for FReepers! Or, time-share vacations just for us. Or start up a buy&sell site like ebay. I could go on & on...

I think that is an excellent idea.

And with advances that have gone forward with web cams (they seem to be standard equipment on most new computers now) if people from different areas could gather at a central place for one day of web-casting we could actually look at everyone having a great time together.

I can envision a lot of reminiscing on-line that anniversary week, the postings of true (and exaggerated, LOL) anecdotes, pics posted of ancient freeps and freepers and all that

Yes that sounds great! I have literally thousands of pics from FR events most of which could be posted to a public forum. And many of course that have been.

And anecdotes...Yup got some of those too. Some would have to post in the Smokey Back Room though...LOL

What an idea-filled post, Syncro, especially the use of web-cams for visuals.

Hopefully some go-getters will put together great events in their own areas during the Tenth Anniversary week and all freepers can participate "vicariously".

"FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world."**

According to Jim Robinson and FR records, FReeRepublic's 10th anniverary will be September 23, 2006.

If something is planned, it should be in September rather than November.

**Taken from opening of "A Few of FR's Finest Thread" and verified by Jim Robinson.

Well, I'm with you two. It should be in September and it should be in California. Would be nice to have a little more planning time though.

Gheeze .... I didn't sign on until Jan. 16, 2001.

Why did I wait so long? Because I didn't know how wonderful FReepers are. :)
