A negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis is within reach
The Guardian ^ | 6/19/06 | Noam chomsky

Posted on 06/19/2006 9:00:11 AM PDT by Oshkalaboomboom

The urgency of halting the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and moving toward their elimination, could hardly be greater. Failure to do so is almost certain to lead to grim consequences, even the end of biology's only experiment with higher intelligence. As threatening as the crisis is, the means exist to defuse it.

A near-meltdown seems to be imminent over Iran and its nuclear programmes. Before 1979, when the Shah was in power, Washington strongly supported these programmes. Today the standard claim is that Iran has no need for nuclear power, and therefore must be pursuing a secret weapons programme. "For a major oil producer such as Iran, nuclear energy is a wasteful use of resources," Henry Kissinger wrote in the Washington Post last year.

Thirty years ago, however, when Kissinger was secretary of state for President Gerald Ford, he held that "introduction of nuclear power will both provide for the growing needs of Iran's economy and free remaining oil reserves for export or conversion to petrochemicals".

Last year Dafna Linzer of the Washington Post asked Kissinger about his reversal of opinion. Kissinger responded with his usual frankness: "They were an allied country."

In 1976 the Ford administration "endorsed Iranian plans to build a massive nuclear energy industry, but also worked hard to complete a multibillion-dollar deal that would have given Tehran control of large quantities of plutonium and enriched uranium the two pathways to a nuclear bomb", Linzer wrote. The top planners of the Bush administration, who are now denouncing these programmes, were then in key national security posts: Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz.

Iranians are surely not as willing as the west to discard history to the rubbish heap. They know that the United States, along with its allies, has been tormenting Iranians for more than 50 years

Gotta love 'ol Nome. He always uses a $10.00 word when a $1.00 word would be less pretentious.

Hmm, The Guardian? I'm sure the NYT would allow him to spew.

A third step would be to live up to article six of the NPT, which obligates the nuclear states to take "good-faith" efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons...

In other words, if the US would just give up their nuclear weapons, Iran would probably stop trying to make theirs.

The sickest thing is that this guy is considered one of the giants of science over there on the left.

He's their Moe, while the others are merely Larry and Curly in his presence.

RE:nuclear power,"When the Shah was in power,Washington supported these programs."That much is true. What Noam fails to point out is the Shah wasn't trying to build a nuclear weapon.Furthermore the Shah was not hostile to the United States. This is classic Chomsky.Building an arguement based on misinformation and outright lies.Check out "The Anti-Chomsky Reader"'Collier/Horowitz.

*Whew*

So, THAT'S why they kidnapped 52 of our citizens and held them captive for 444 days, provided funds to terrorists worldwide to attack and kill American citizens with and who now supplies terrorists in Iraq with the weapons and material with which to maim and kill our soldiers with.

And to think, I was actually angry at the Iranians about these things. I didn't know it was all OUR fault.

Oh. It's always our fault. America is the only evil country to ever exist.

At least that's according to the Marxist fanatics on the Left.

Chumpsky says:

"A third step would be to live up to article six of the NPT, which obligates the nuclear states to take "good-faith" efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons, a binding legal obligation, as the world court determined. None of the nuclear states has lived up to that obligation, but the United States is far in the lead in violating it."

But what is he talking about?

The United States is violating article six of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty?

This is an outright lie couched in a passive accusation!

The world court has "determined" that we have a legal obligation to make a "good-faith" effort to eliminate nuclear weapons?

And it is the U.S. and not Iran which is not making a "good-faith" effort to eliminate nuclear weapons?

Chompsky is a malicious liar.

Someone once quipped in a post about an article that should be written: "Noam Chomsky; Idiot or Moron?" Actually, the man is functionally very intelligent, just totally dishonest, and self-defeatingly so. Chomsky would settle for nothing less than the complete collapse of the West, period. Shame we couldn't just spin off some sort of "alternate reality bubble" and install him in it, give him power, and let him have his way. Instead of being hailed as the intellectual guru he sees himself as, the victorious jihadists would drag him out into the street and shoot him, unless they chose beheading. We could all watch and have a good chuckle, as the realization of what he had done dawned on his distorted psyche.
