Blanco To Send State Police, National Guard into New Orleans
June 19, 2006 04:20 PM
In the wake of a shooting that left five people dead this weekend, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco pledged Monday afternoon to send additional law enforcement resources into the city of New Orleans, WAFB 9 NEWS Capitol Correspondent Marie Centanni reported.
Blanco said the additional law enforcement presence, to be made up of Louisiana State Police and National Guard troops, will be in place for an initial commitment of two-and-a-half months, Centanni reported.
The governor did not disclose an exact number of personnel she will deploy. "Right now we are talking with Chief (Warren) Riley about his exact needs and we will respond with personnel from the State Police and National Guard," Governor Blanco said.
Earlier in the day, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin asked the governor to deploy up to 300 National Guard troops and 60 state police officers to patrol New Orleans following a violent weekend in which five people were shot to death.
"The senseless slaying of five teenagers this weekend is shocking," Governor Blanco said. "Things like this should never happen and I am going to do all I can to stop it."
The slayings, plus a fatal stabbing in an argument about beer, brought this year's murder toll to 53, raising fears that violence was back on the rise in a city plagued by violent crime before Hurricane Katrina drove residents away last year.
Saturday's incident was one of the bloodiest in this city's turbulent history.
The last killing with that many victims was in 1995.
"I will not tolerate criminal behavior," Blanco said. "We must protect our citizens." "Having more law enforcement patrolling the streets is a direct deterrent to the criminal element." "Criminals are not welcome in New Orleans of anywhere else in this state," Blanco said.
In addition to requesting help from the state, the city council said it would consider increasing overtime available for police and pay for more officers and street patrols.
Council members also called for a "crime summit" within two weeks.
uhmmm..I believe her order comes about 10 months too late.
Mayor White that was the outcome of your generousity. I didn't like it when it happened and still don't like it.
That cesspool is sinking a lot faster than experts predicted.
Send in the Liberals. They can negotiate with the criminals and discuss their problems. They can perhaps sign a treaty or something like that.
The article mentions the slaying of 5 teenagers and also a fatal stabbing in an argument over beer.
Anyone have info on the slain teenagers?
Future model citizens or police blotter material?
I am writing my senator DIPSTICK FIENGOLD and demanding that because of the killings, we pull ALL our troops out of New Orleans.
looks like things are getting back to normal in NOLA...
Chocolate city!
"Today is a day when New Orleanians are stepping up. We've had enough," Nagin said. "This is our line in the sand. We're saying we're not going any further."
Not really stepping up if you gotta bring in the military. What's up with the local law enforcement?
They were all shot at the intersection of Danneel and Josephine streets in the early morning hours. Ages 16, 17, and three 19 year olds. Two were found outside the vehicle, three inside a Ford Explorer.
Personal actions, choices and behavior have consequences... Personal consequences should NOT fall to others to resolve... The folks of New Orleans have constructed a toilet in their own image --- now all they need do is sit on it.. Semper Fi
Yes, we must have an exit strategy and a timetable.
As to the tolerance of criminals, was the improper/unconstitutional/illegal confiscation of citizens' firearms a criminal act? Pot black?
The Big Sleazy.
Perfect city for a Democrat convention.
How long before they start confiscating guns again?
New Orleans is getting back to normal!
NOPD and NO sheriffs should be able to handle this. Not that many people there to police. Political show of force.
