Dan Rather accused CBS executives yesterday of not having "lived up to their obligation to allow me to do substantive work there" as the network announced his departure after a 44-year career.
CBS officials heaped praise on the longtime anchor, even as they were ushering him out the door yesterday. Rather, for his part, made clear his frustration with the network for refusing to renew his contract or give him an ample workload at "60 Minutes."

Rather, who anchored the "CBS Evening News" for 24 years, relinquished the post early last year after apologizing for a 2004 story -- based on documents that could not be authenticated -- that charged President Bush had received favorable treatment from the National Guard three decades ago.
McManus would not address whether the botched Guard story, which prompted the resignations of three senior network executives and the firing of Rather's producer, was a factor in CBS's decision to end Rather's career there. On the advice of company lawyers, McManus never met with Rather.

John Hinderaker, a lawyer whose conservative blog raised early questions about the disputed Guard documents, said it was "really indefensible" for Rather to have stood by the story for nearly two weeks. But, he said, "I've got some sympathy for the view that he had a long and distinguished career and that one episode shouldn't negate a lot of years of hard work. I always kind of liked the guy. He was a little quirky, an old-fashioned anchorman."
Rem Rieder, editor of American Journalism Review, said Rather "certainly brought on a lot of his own problems with the National Guard story. But given his long history with CBS and all the work he's done, you just wish there would have been a more graceful way to end this saga....

To think, Dan Rather would still be getting away with his liberal bias and fakery, if it wasn't for those meddling Freepers and the blogosphere. Buckhead, TankerKC, Howlin... This one's for you!
Courage.
Ping!
Dan Rather was a frivolous infotainer who never did a day of "substantive work" in his life.
Oh, Danny boy........... the rocking chair is ca-lling....
Cuban picks another loser ?
I couldn't care less if Blather took a long walk off a short pier. With that said, why doesn't the old coot just retire? He's 74. Give it up Dan.
Instead he got what he deserved. Disgrace.
ROTFLMAO!
So, will HDNet be changing its name to HDNut?
Don't you all think it was just perfect the
way Blather and CBS spoke of each other in the
"letting go" ? Welcome to the world of kissy-
kissy MSM that passes for journalism today.
Barf bags, anyone?

Dan Rather was 76 and looked older.
How surprising is it they want him gone?
He's collected 250 million in salaries, yet kept CBS in constant last place.
Rather now holds the distinction of being the guy who let the cat out of the bag.
For 70 years guys like Cronkite and Jennings and Koppel toiled in the shadows practicing the black art of deception. And Rather ruined it
The guy is a pariah. I hear Saddam won't even return his calls, and the Zarqawi family managed to bury their departed without so much as a thank you
It's over, Dan. The wheel has turned. It's time for you to go.
Did he think he was going to be prime time forever? Why don't these people ever step down gracefully?
I'm sure he could make a nice living out of being a visiting prof at schools of journalism across the country - Florida in the winter, Vermont in the fall, DC during the political campaigns. What's the man thinking going on some feeble cable station?
I think there is so much happening in the world, including his politics of liberalism collapsing in this country and he can't stand to be on the sidelines when he sees the world changing.
Remember many journalists have told people they get into the business to help change the world.
They should get into the business to report the news, not change the world.
Broadsword calling Danny Boy...Broadsword calling Danny Boy...You're toast Danny Boy...Over!
It's a narcissistic love of himself and the power he once held. He believes deeply that he alone made a difference in American politics; he just doesn't understand that history will view him as a benchmark for journalistic fraud. After all, he committed so many frauds on the people that his latest and greatest never registers in his mind.
THAT is why he's doing this.
He can believe what he wants. He's just a journalist. If he wanted to make a difference he should have gone into politics himself, or become a nurse, or a soldier, or an engineer; something useful.
