Their 155-page report said average global surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere rose about 1 degree during the 20th century.

Wow. I wonder why this didn't make the headline? Amazing! We're going to boil away any minute.

On second thought, I wonder what the margin of error is? Probably more than one degree, I suspect.

I think the same about that margin of error. I don't even think that the earth's current temperatures can be quantified to less than a degree, except in a relatively few specific locations, much less those from back in history and prehistory. However, climate scientists seem inclined to disagree with us on that. But I'm not too convinced that they are right...over my life I've seen scientific theory revised in all sorts of directions at fairly regular intervals.

As an aside, I think you can buy 3 different thermometers, and generally get 3 different temperature readings in the same place simultaneously.
