Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has denied the federal government's request to place 1,500 additional national guard troops on the Mexico border according to a breaking news alert just issued on ABC Channel 7 news in Los Angeles.

Update:

Gov. Says "No" to Sending More Guard Troops to Border

June 23, 2006, 5:43 PM PDT

The Bush administration this week asked California to send an additional 1,500 National Guard troops to the Mexican border, but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger denied the request, two California National Guard officials said Friday.

The National Guard Bureau, an arm of the Pentagon, asked for the troops to fill recruiting shortfalls for the mission in New Mexico and Arizona. But Schwarzenegger said the request would stretch the California guard too thin if an emergency or disaster struck.

The overall deployment for the border mission would remain at 6,000, the guard officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Schwarzenegger's communications director, Adam Mendelsohn, said the governor felt sending more troops was an inappropriate burden on the state and would disrupt the guard's training schedule.

On June 1, Schwarzenegger agreed to send the California National Guard to the Mexican border to help the federal government's effort to control illegal immigration. That ended a 17-day standoff with the Bush administration over whether the state would join the border patrol effort and who would pay for it.

California has committed to putting 1,000 troops on the border by July 31 and has 250 there already.

I thought Arnold was vehemently opposed to illegal immigration? What happened to that?

Well...then I don't want to hear a PEEP from him for more $$$$$$$$ for the hospitals, schools etc.

I am SICK of Schwarzenegger....he flip-flops as much as Kerry.

I bet he got a home visit from Susan Sarandon...who wants us to build schools in MEXICO...rather than build a fence.

He put them there and announced his concerns had been addressed and he was okay with the proces. At least that's what I thought I heard on the news. This doesn't make sense.

I've been searching myself for one. If it is something that is announced on the local news as "Beaking news out of Sacramento", how do you post it if the only source is the television and not a printed source?

I'm with you TX! I've had it with him! I live close to the border and would really like to keep my head! Those beheadings will be taking place on our side of the border and Arnie won't be keeping me safe!

Okay...now I really am confused.

Are the guards that are in California now from New Mexico and Arizona, or what??

Surely they aren't asking California to send guards to New Mexico and Arizona....because if that is so..then I don't blame Arnold...California should use their own guards there...and then any that the FEDS feel are necessary to help out on the border....IMHO>

Just heard the local news, that is what they were asking.

In the short run, there has to be money in addition to the normal. If expanded out over time I would expect the benefits to outweigh the cost. God be with our National Guard, they walk out to face those killing their own police. May the price be 'None' 'Zilch' 'Zero' 'Nada'
