Israeli military post in Gaza attacked - Popular Resistance Committees claims responsibility

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Palestinian militants attacked an Israeli military post near the border with the Gaza Strip early Sunday, the army said, days after warning of an imminent attack in the area.

The army said there was an exchange of fire near the Kerem Shalom crossing, which is used to bring cargo from Egypt into Gaza. The army said there were four casualties, but gave no further details.

Officials from the Popular Resistance Committees, a small Palestinian militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack and said members of Hamas' military wing also participated.

"Our fighters infiltrated the Israeli army military location near so called Kerem Shalom," said Abu Mujahid, a PRC spokesman. "They succeeded in blowing up several Israeli vehicles and clashed with Israeli soldiers. The battle is still going on. The number of fighters is bigger than any time. We have some martyrs who fell during the battle."

He said full details of the operation would be released at a news conference later in the day.

The operation, he said, was meant to avenge the death of the group's leader, Jamal Abu Samhadana, in an Israeli airstrike earlier this month. Abu Samhadana was killed shortly after accepting a senior security position in the Hamas-led government.

The Israeli army issued warnings over several days last week that militants were plotting an attack at Kerem Shalom. The warning prompted EU monitors to close the nearby Rafah crossing, Gaza's main gateway to the outside world.

In Monday's attack, the attackers apparently infiltrated through a tunnel and entered an area near an Israeli farming community. "The kibbutz is fine. It is closed and secure," a resident told Army Radio. But he said residents were ordered to stay in their homes.

Popular Resistance Committees

Not so popular in my book. I wonder if they used a text messaging voting system to see if they were more popular than American Idol.

Hamas preticipated? That would be an official act of war. Israel should lite the candle and flatten gaza.
End of story.

Hard to believe - they hit a military target? As in people who could defend themselves (as opposed to the innocents they usually beat on)?

Palestinian militants attack army post

YANIV ZOHAR, Associated Press Writer

SUFA CROSSING, Israel - Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip attacked an Israeli military post early Sunday, and the Israeli army said there were at least four Israeli casualties.

The Popular Resistance Committees, which took responsibility for the attack, claimed they took the body of an Israeli killed in the attack. The army declined to comment on the claim.

At least three militants were killed in the attack near the Kerem Shalom crossing, said the PRC, a small Palestinian militant group.

The PRC said militants from the ruling Hamas group participated in the attack, the first successful infiltration into Israel since the Jewish state withdrew from the coastal area in August.

A short while later an explosion was heard in the area, but it was unclear what caused the blast.

"Our fighters infiltrated the Israeli army military location near so called Kerem Shalom," said Abu Mujahid, another PRC spokesman. "They succeeded in blowing up several Israeli vehicles and clashed with Israeli soldiers. The battle is still going on. The number of fighters is bigger than any time. We have some martyrs who fell during the battle."

He said full details of the operation would be released at a news conference later in the day. The Kerem Shalom is used to bring cargo from Egypt into Gaza.

Residents in the nearby communal farm said the Palestinian militants had infiltrated the military post through a tunnel dug under the border fence.

Abu Mujahid refused to confirm the report, but said: "It was a very complicated and well-studied operation. The details are going to shock the Zionists. There are many surprises that are going to be announced about planning and about the process and about the battle itself."

The operation, he said, was meant to avenge the death of the group's leader, Jamal Abu Samhadana, in an Israeli airstrike earlier this month. Abu Samhadana was killed shortly after accepting a senior security position in the Hamas-led government.

The Israeli army issued warnings over several days last week that militants were plotting an attack near the Kerem Shalom and Sufa crossings. The warning prompted EU monitors to close the nearby Rafah crossing, Gaza's main gateway to the outside world.
