First off, he admitted it. This means that either:

the press had already found out and was about to break the story,
the authorities found out and were investigating,
his political foes found out and were going to leak it,
the wife found out and laid down an ultimatum,
or he was advised to admit it, knowing that the voters will forgive him if he admits it himself, rather than have to answer allegations.
