Santorum is definitely a conservative and it is a shame he may not be reelected.

Why didnt he back Toomey? What is Specter doing for him, as payback? Why would he diss the people that put him in office? What was he thinking??

Why can't freepers just stop mocking him and instead support him???

Because we were hurt by his support of Specter. You've got to understand, we thought he was one of us - turns out he's just another politician. I support him the way I support any politician whose views I agree with the majority of the time - I'll vote for him. I'll probably even put a sign in my yard. But he's not getting my money or my time. I contributed my time and my money to his campaign in 2000. Those days are over. He betrayed me when he whored himself for Specter.

Plus there is an argument that Ricky is an overall negative for the party. On balance he may need to go.

I'd rather have him in the party than you.

Yeah it doesn't take much for the backstabbers to stick the knife in.

I support Santorum and Toomey has already forgiven him, but if PA conservatives don't like him, that's Santorum's fault and not conservatives.

He supported Specter and now the chickens are coming home to roost. You don't see Specter out campaigning for him, do you. Just goes to show you what a vile POS Specter is.

Yeah, if it weren't for Specter, we might have gotten Roberts and Alito confirmed....oh wait...

Because it is normal protocol to support the other senator's reelection if you are of the same party. In AZ McCain is supporting Kyl in his reelection.

It's because Santorum endorsed Specter over [Toomey]. Quite unforgivable, considering we knew how bad Specter would be as head of [Judiciary]

Specter was the incumbent Senator, and the senior Senator in Santorum's own party. Santorum is chairman of the Republican Caucus, therefore is inclined and even obligated to support the members of the caucus. Moreover, if it weren't for Specter's strong backing and support, a liberal Democrat would be sitting in Santorum's place in the Senate now. Santorum isn't inclined to play the old gotcha-style, backstabbing political game. To have expected Santorum to take a different course of action is not a poor reflection on him, but a poor reflection on you, not only in common sense, but in integrity.

Coupled by the fact that Toomey himself is strongly supporting Santorum and says it would be crazy not to, finishes off any credibility of your argument. According to Toomey himself, you are crazy.

Old and Tired, I have to tell ya, I always thought Santorum was a politician first, conservative second.

I will always be angry with him over his support of Specter over Toomey, but I am voting for him.

If it wasn't for conservatives phone calls, faxes, and emails to Specter and the RNC Specter would have opposed the judges.

It's a long time between now and November. The good news about getting bad news now is that the other side slacks off and gets comfortable.

It doesn't mean that it's in the bag for Santorum. He has to work for it.

As far as his support in conservative circles, he has to find a way to bring everyone back together. I wouldn't argue that FR brought him trouble. As a conservative, he has responsibility for his views and positions. As a member of the Senate, he has the added responsibility of winning his constituents over.

Every Republican candidate has the responsibility of winning his constituents over, he just hasn't found the right way to mend fences where they need mending. Or he is not aware of the scope or nature of the rift. Or both. And so he struggles.

As I recall, GW supported Specter too. So I suppose none of the anti Santorum crowd voted for GW in 04 either?

PA voters need to vote Republican to make up for the likes of the beast and chuckie in NY. Bush needs every Republican seat we can get in the mid-term elections. Our country is worth it.

And we can't support George Allen if he's the nominee in '08, either, according to this logic. Allen strongly supported Specter and had large amounts of cash pumped into his campaign.

I'm sorry I don't agree with you. Republican Politicians should be loyal to their stated beliefs and the people who voted them into office and volunteered in their campaigns, before they should be loyal to a democrat in Republican clothing like Spector.

I say this knowing full well how it works with elected members and their support for one another.

Obviously the GOP is impure. I'm sitting out 06 and 08. Hell, I live in NJ, so I basically CAN'T vote in statewide elections. And we all know how bad Jorge Bush is, so I guess I'll just give up.
