House Race Hotline Extra: Utah 03 Some quotes to illustrate the importance of this race.
"There is a very good chance that he could go down," Jeff Hartley, executive director of the Utah Republican Party, tells First Read. "You wouldn't have the involvement from the White House if he weren't in jeopardy." (NBC News)
Consultant LeVarr Webb: "A low turnout is expected, so be one of the few who make a difference and have a voice." (Utah Policy Daily) )
UT GOP Chair Joe Cannon "says he's trying to stay neutral" in his brother's UT 03 primary, "but it didn't come across that way" in his online comments about challenger/alleged Satan victim John Jacob (Salt Lake Tribune).
A poll published over the weekend by the Deseret Morning News and KSL-TV, conducted by Dan Jones & Associates, found Cannon ahead 46-33 percent among registered voters in the 3rd District. But 18 percent of voters remained undecided. "That's one of the highest 'undecideds' numbers I've seen so close to a primary election," said Jones, who has polled in Utah for more than 30 years. (Deseret News)
Jacob backtracks on his "Satan" comments: "What the [Salt Lake Tribune] reported and what I said weren't the same thing. It wasn't that [the devil] was trying to keep me out of Washington. I was just saying when you're trying to get into politics, there's a lot of adversity.
Contrary to reports of saying it was keeping me from being there, it was going to help me in training when I get there. It's not the devil; it's adversity." (Utah Policy Daily)
There sure is a good chance that Cannon will go down? Why? Well, that's because Cannon has made a career of voting for amnesty, rewards, privileges, and benefits for illegal aliens. Now that he's got a challenger with enough funds to put up a real challenge, and the word is out on Cannon's terrible record (despite his lies to the contrary) Cannon finds himself in real trouble.
What is that voting record that has so many of his consituents up in arms?
Voted against amendment to end special amnesty for certain Central Americans in 2006
Cosponsoring bill to reward illegal aliens with amnesty in 2005-2006

Cannon going down would send a resounding message to all in congress.
It certaintly would. It would mean that other Republican Congressman like Tancredo can now from out of state and try to defeat my sitting Republican Congressman in my district if he disagree's on this out of states congressman's pet issue. OhJoy, what a great precedent. Great thing for House Republican unity.
Anybody Know what time the polls opened in UTAH?
It would mean the open borders and uuncontrol immigration are not popular issues with amny Americans.
What happens if Cannon wins? Does that mean that the people like the Presidents plan or something like the Pence plan
Are President Bush and first lady Laura also "out of state"?
Yes, but Cannon has the devil on his side, so he's assured of victory.
When Cannon wins, and he will 53% to 47% for "the devil is out to get me" Boy, listen for the sounds of crickets from the Mexiphobe crowd on FR.
The President is the Executive. Plus he ahs been made a issue in this campaign. There is quite a difference. There is a reason that in such a place as the HOuse where you got over 200 Republicans of different views this stuff is not and cannot be done. It encourages backstabing, sniping, and mistrust among the Republican Caucus. On this close party line votes you cannot have that
If that poll were accurate then Cannon would be a shoo-in. The fact is the only reason why they're reporting he could lose is that every other poll has it far tighter. Maybe it has something to do with likely voters instead...
nope it will be time to make the next open borders flunky sweats his re-election
SO true. I hope they leave this poorman alone for a while if he wins. Its like been a nonstop campaign against him by these elements for 4 years straight if not longer
And that would be Chafee in September...
"When Cannon wins, and he will 53% to 47%..."
(Read my posting history for my opinion on who will win, I'm sick of writing it.)
But if that happens, it'd be pretty big considering Cannon got 58% in 2004.
He is danger because radical organizations and groups have had a bulleye on him for years. That wears down anyone. Even now very conservative Mike Pence is finding how to be the target of them.
"The President is the Executive."
And Laura Bush is what?
If the anti immigration lobby which has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Cannon for 4 years doesn't get Cannon this time and Cannon wins then this cannot be spun bythose forces as anything but a defeat for their cause. This is the first real race where is a battle of ideas among the Republicans. This race will be far more of an indicator than Bilray race was
The First Lady of the Executive Branch inpersona
Jacobs had a lot of help from outside groups running radio ads in a high decible campaign and is facing one opponent as opposed to 2 in '04. It doesn't surprise me that his vote percentage will likely be down some over 04.
Jacob also had to finance his own campaign while Cannon was given hundreds of thousands of dollars from pro-immigration groups.
It shows how insane these Mexiphobes are. Mike Pence's plan is actually very tough, but recognizes our economy cannot thrive merely on domestic labor alone. Or do the Mexiphobes want to pick fruit and clean hotel room toilets.
"If the anti immigration lobby which has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Cannon for 4 years..."
For one, it's been two years. He is a representative, not president.
Two, show me anything against Cannon in 2005, especially early 2005. This stuff got started mostly after Jacob's surprising showing at the convention beating Cannon 52-48.
LOL! I'll give you guys some credit, you don't quit until the fat lady sings.
OH BTW, you do know that jacob did blame his campaign contribution torubles on satan.
They've spent $50,000.
How much is a Presidential endorsement worth? Free use of his voice in radio ads and phone recordings? Hundreds of Thousands of dollar? Millions? Priceless?
That doesn't include the massive cash infusion from the pro-illegal alien lobby that Cannon has been receiving in this bellweather election.
Maybe they could spare a few dollars to help you buy a clue.
"The First Lady of the Executive Branch inpersona"
I guess I wasn't aware her name was on the ballot.
"Jacob also had to finance his own campaign while Cannon was given hundreds of thousands of dollars from pro-immigration groups."
That wasn't really my point. My point was I won't be surprised if Cannon's vote total is down over 04 because of the national attention given this race and the in kind contributions of soft dollar money ads on Jacobs' behalf.
By the way, looking at your Freeper name, you do realize Reagan was very pro-immigration don't you?? Would you guys have been targetting Reagan for primary defeat too?? Cannon is pretty much right in step with Reagan's thinking on immigration and guest worker plans, like it or not. I have the quotes to prove it if you like.
"How much is a Presidential endorsement worth? Free use of his voice in radio ads and phone recordings? Hundreds of Thousands of dollar? Millions? Priceless?"
One newspaper is saying $136,000. As opposed to Team America's $40,500.
I would rather have Old Scratch himself in that seat then an open border pro amnesty politician.
Are you 100% sure DemocraticUnderground wouldn't be a better forum for you?
$40,500 that could have been used against RINO Chris Shays.
Oh that's right tancredo/bay buchanan have a fetish of campigning against 100% ACU congressman such as Chris Cannon, bevermind.
True, The difference is with Mike Pence also is that this mightbe somebody going for higher office and has quite a backing. I think they mesed with the wrong person there and by people calling him a rino etc
Probably the one policy where Reagan was flawed. His amnesty gave us the nightmare we have today.
We should have rounded up all the illegals back then shipped them out and built the wall, we didn't and the problem is ten times worse today.
Wrong. The anti-ILLEGAL-immigration lobby.
Boy, listen for the sounds of crickets from the Mexiphobe crowd on FR.
Wrong. The anti-illegal-immigration crowd on FR.
Why do y'all insist on distorting the debate? To disguise that you are calling for rewarding lawbreakers?
Did I lose something in the translation? You're not denying that Cannon received hundreds of thousands of dollars from pro-mass immigration/amnesty groups are you? You only want to rant about Buchanan's democratic right to participate while conveniently ignoring that little tidbit.
You do know that Jacob is pro-amnesty, right?
Oh, so poor Cannon is a victim, "worn down" by those meanie radical organizations?
Every other observer plainly sees that Cannon is in trouble because he has become the amnesty poster boy, and as such is out of step with his conservative district. The only reason you are defending him is because he has helped facilitate the flow of illegals.
It is so lame when the FROBL trots out all these strawmen, and denies the Cannon record when that record is the only reason they support him.
Just come out and admit that you like Cannon for the same reason the immigration lawyers like him. Step out from behind the strawman, it'll be okay.
You do know that Jacob advocates breaking immigration law, right?
uh no you didn't, John Jacob blamed his lack of campaign funds due to satan.
Could somebody ping me to tonight's (or tomorrow's) inevitable "John Jacob won even though he lost" thread?
It is extremely unusual for a President to get involved in a local GOP primary race.
As if an "F" isn't enough of failure, no we need to add a minus just to emphasize that we really really dislike what he did.
Because we are totally cereal.
I am just commenting on the way folks try to color their opponents by either omitting key words or playing the race card.
