War Hero Urges President Bush to Save the Mt. Soledad Cross and Veterans Memorial

ANN ARBOR, MI – Retired Navy Rear Admiral Jeremiah Denton, highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, former POW and former U.S. Senator, in a personal letter sent on June 14th, asked President Bush to save the Mt. Soledad cross, which is the centerpiece of a national war memorial honoring our veterans. Rear Admiral Denton urged the President to consider saving the cross by means of the federal government exercising its power of eminent domain in order to maintain the land as a National monument.

Rear Admiral Denton first came to the American public’s attention in 1966 as a POW during a televised interview by his Communist captors. Before the interview, Denton was tortured and threatened with more torture if he didn’t properly answer their questions regarding alleged American atrocities. Despite those threats, Denton responded in front of the gathered Communist dignitaries, and glaring camera lights, “Whatever the position of my government is, I believe it, I support it, and I will support it as long as I live.” During the televised interview, Rear Admiral Denton blinked his eyes in Morse Code spelling out the message “T-O-R-T-U-R-E,” which was the first confirmation Naval Intelligence had that American POWs in Vietnam were being tortured.

Issue an Executive Order. If Clinton can do it to the land where low sulfer coal exists at the behest of the Lippo Group, then W can do it for Vets.

I second that. GWB, just create an executive order to buy the little plot of land as a national monument.

Why can't they sell the small patch of ground on which the cross stands to a private group and then the Constitution is no longer a problem........

Forget that wimpy Bush. He will only act if the left-wing media and leading demoncrats ask him to act.

I think that was tried but the court blocked the sale.

Do you think Mr. Freneau, and his friends Jefferson, Madison, et al ever came across public displays of Christianity in their day?
This is yet another assault on the American ideal as well as a further contortion of our Constitution to slake the liberal thirst.

Tony Snow said during today's WH press briefing that the administration is looking at what they can do to get around the court mandated removal of this cross.

Every where they looked.

No doubt. The spirit of anti-christ is very strong in America these days.

How about doing things the constitutional way by impeaching the federal judge......ooops we'd need to have a congress to do that, sorry.

He can indeed, but he will drop his amnesty plan before he takes this action. In other words, never.

It's been tired. Multiple times. Each time a court has found some flaw. While the county recorder lists the winning bidder, the Mt Soldedad Memorial Assoc. as the owner, the 9th Circus had nullified that sale. However, the city never paid the MSAS back. So it's either on private land already or still on public land as the 9th Circus determined. Congress and Bush already declared it a national war memorial. The voters (over 70%) approved transfer of the land to the Feds for preservation but a state court has blocked that, the same state court which decided a week before the election that simple majority wasn't enough and ordered a requirement of 2/3rd approval. Appeals are pending.

If Bush has any worth as a "conservative" then he'll issue an executive order.
