BRAMPTON, Ont. (CP) - An Ontario justice of the peace refused Tuesday to grant bail to a pair of youths who face terror-related charges after they were swept up in a series of dramatic arrests in Toronto earlier this month.
The youths, aged 15 and 18, were taken back into custody after the decision. The older of the two youths was 17 at the time of the alleged offences. Neither can be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The pair are both facing charges of participating in a terrorist group, and receiving training in a terrorist group.
Michael Block, the lawyer for the 15-year-old boy, said the denial of bail came as a blow to his young client.
"It's a disappointing result for my client and his family," said Block, who plans to take his client's bid for bail to an Ontario court judge on July 12.
"It's an efficient process that takes place in front of an Ontario court judge, not the justice of the peace," Block said. "It's the best way to get (my client) out of custody."
Block said he hopes that making the boy's case for bail in front a judge rather than a justice of the peace may give his client a better chance at getting bail.
If that move fails, Block said he'll consider appealing the ruling.
Twelve men and five youths, all from the Toronto area, were charged earlier this month in an alleged plot to attack targets in southern Ontario.
The arrests have been billed as Canada's largest counterterrorism operation since 9-11.
So far none of the 17 men arrested have been granted bail.
Earlier Tuesday, another suspect, 20-year-old Zakaria Amara, was ordered to appear in court July 17 for his bail hearing.
Neither details of the evidence nor the reasons bail was denied can be disclosed because of a sweeping publication ban.

Way to go Canada!!
By God, the Canadians are starting to get it. I wonder how long it will take before our appeasement defeatist democRATs come around. Don't hold your breath on that one.
If that boy talked in the presence of a parent, and told everything he knew, (and it takes time to verify it)and then had it transcibed and notarized, he would be out on bail faster than a Liberal fart exits a Moonbat ass.The lad is not co-operating with the investigation and likely has been told to clam up. Thus he sits , cooling his little terrorist heels in the lockup until he breaks , or his parents break.
Things are just as they should be.
Indeed. Harper was a big surprise to me..
All are moose, correct?

Excellent!
He's a surprise to many ... but not to some of us. We're lucky to have him.
