Almost 6 inches of rain fell in just 75 minutes near Hobby Airport, the National Weather Service reported.

PA is being hit very hard, as is NY. The immediate concern has been flash flooding from several days of heavy rain. Beyond flash flooding, the ability of the large rivers to accommodate the huge volume of water is a big problem. Rivers haven't crested yet, and very high levels are predicted throughout the watershed. Trenton and Philadelphia are also bracing for the impact.
To: mewzilla
Susquehanna expected to crest tomorrow afternoon between 38-40 feet. Agnes caused a crest of 40.9 feet in 1972. The levee walls are at 41 feet. This will be a close one.
I live in Bucks County where it is not so bad yet, but the water moves down the Delaware and we are expecting bad flooding at New Hope by tomorrow. Three years in a row for those poor folks.

As I reacll, we had this kind of flooding up in the North East back in the last end of the 60s or the first end of the 70s. I don't think Algore was as interested in screaming about the global warming thing.

If you read the article, it's Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas of Luzerne County, which do in fact have 200,000 people.
On another board there's an unsourced RUMOR (and I stress RUMOR that the reason for the evacs despite the crest being below the top of the levees is there's a bubble in one of the levees.
I suspect that since Katrina there's just much less confidence in levees.

For the Susquehanna, this is the worst I've seen since Agnes. I live to the west, and the worst we've had is some small stream and creek flooding. And, of course, the infamous Lowman Crossover is closed. Again.
